Smile Mama said yes to a FRAG tank, now what?

So I got the green light to set up a Frag tank. I'm thinking of using a 29 I have or maybe a 20 long. I have some PC retro's or T-5 retro's that I plan on using for the lighting. My hope is I can start assembling some frags for my 125 build.

Is there any reason to have a sump or any type of filter for a frag tank? There won't be any fish or other livestock besides corals.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a sump on your current tank? You could plumb the drain into your sump

The idea of a shared sump would be great. The problem is I don't have the space for the two tanks to be any wear near each other.

A sump would still be a good idea for nutrient export (macro algae, and skimmer just like a regular tank). I would suggest throwing in a small fish or two as well and feed them as your corals will appreciate the poo. I have heard of corals not having as good of color in tanks without fish and the thought was simply they don't get the extra wastes for food that they would if the fish were there. Coincidence maybe, but wouldnt hurt to have a pest cleaner like a 6line in there anyways IMO.

What size frag tank are you getting? Go as big as possible. I got a 24x24x12 and wish I went bigger.

At this time the frag tank is on hold. Money is a bit tight right now. I have plans on setting up a 29 gallon for this project. The only purpose I have for setting it up is to allow some frags to grow out a bit while the 125 I have planed comes together.
