Snails sucked into the overflow

I have a glass holes overflow (nano), I recently was having flow problems, and tore apart the plumbing and found roughly 7 snail shells in the elbow. Does anyone have a mode to keep the snails out???????

Its black plastic mesh used to cover gutters. Any hardware store sells it. I comes in a roll.

Do you have a durso drain?
I was wondering on the durso if the elbow is supposed to point up or down or does it matter?

Durso's should point down. This prevents that "vortex" sound from happening.

I used egg crate and cut it to fit into top of overflow box. I had the same problem happen before I did this and it has never happened again.
