SO are you talking about a Marineland Stealth Heater? If you are you are going to want to get a new heater. They have been recalled by Marineland. If you bought it new I think Marineland will refund your money. If not, throw it away. They have been frying peoples tanks! Either that or they just stop working.

Marineland Heater Recall Information
The heaters have been redesigned since this recall. They still hold the marineland stealth name though. Im pretty sure its illegal for retail stores to sell recalled products.

Wow, I'd get A/C!...or, try the options I'm listing after the quote below first. I've bought a couple good window A/C units from craigslist for $50. At least have one cooling the room where the tank is. It'll be much more comfortable for you and the tank will be ok also. Get a chiller if you want to but you can kill two birds with one stone at a fraction of the price with a window A/C unit.

With a lid off and a fan, he might have a tank sitting at 90 degrees instead of 93...... Either one of those is too high! So why bother having him waste his time with adding fans and crap? While it's wishful thinking, it's not going to work.
Whoa now. He said his house temperature was 78 so it's not unreasonable to think that he might be able to maintain the tanks temperature at 84. You can keep a house reasonably cool by opening the windows to cool down at night as long as the insulation is good and the house is sealed up well. Blowing air up from a basement helps a great deal if you have one. None of us knew what measures he can take to keep the house cool so it's unwise to assume that a chiller is the only option. Why not take a second to think of every option and see if they work first?

Does the temperature affect the cycling process in any way?

yes it does, the bacteria you are trying to grow is temp sensitive like any other living creature. To hot or too cold and it will fail to thrive. The ideal temp lies between 77-86 degrees F. Of course rapid temp changes are also going to effect the rate of bacterial development.

My tank has been running for a week now. I haven't done a test yet. So its possible, with my tank reaching temps of 90 degrees that my tank is going haywire and cycling not effectively? My live could now be dead?

I'm not sure to what degree or how hot it has to be to have negative effects. I wouldn't worry about the bacteria so much because they're easily replaceable if they do die. I'd be more concerned with other "life in the rock and sand like worms, pods, etc. because they take much more time to increase in numbers. At this point, take the necessary steps to get the tank down to the proper temperature range as soon as you can manage to do it. Then, focus on letting your tank mature, performing tests, performing maintenance, etc. until it's time to start slowly adding animals. One step at a time.

90 wont kill off the bacteria but you may lose somethings if you used live rock. You will continue to cycle even with the high temps. You will need to stabilize the temp before it can truly complete though.

I have a cheap old air conditioner in my living room I run mainly for the tank, cooling me is a bonus same reason I bought a generator, the extra electricity is a nice bonus too.

I said the exact same thing about the window ac unit in a prior post. You must have not read the whole thread.

You obviously also didn't read the part about him not having a basement.

So maybe you need to go back and read what he's working with, because it has already been established previously in this thread.

That was my original post, so I never said a chiller is the only option.

I realized you recommended a window A/C unit at one point and it was a good recommendation. I also realized the following after that recommendation.

Id post in the Want to buy section to see if you can get a used chiller.
I actually read the part about him not having a basement but didn't remember it, especially with how distracting this thread has gotten-like now.

I think it's best we not continue this because it's really pointless and serves no purpose but to distract from Babby's issues.

Well still no chiller. With the cooler days lately I've been holding 80. Now my tank has been going for 11 days. I haven't tested yet for a complete cycle. I've kind of just turned light off and let sit due to the temp problem. I also don't have anything to test ammonia yet. Plan to get a master test kit tomorrow for saltwater.

Well....a buddy of mine who manages a local pet store which doesn't stock or carry anything from saltwater fish or supplies, ordered me a clown fish off the simple thought I was setting up a saltwater tank. It came in there friday. They had no place for it being as they only stock freshwater fish. So I have it now. Its been in my tank since friday at 3pm. He's alive and active. I feel bad for him because I don't know how this outcome will be with my tank getting so warm. I also don't know exactly where my cycle is being as I don't have anything to test ammonia.

Should I put him in someone elses tank until I get my tank straightened out as far as temp and cycle completion? He's been in there 50+ hrs.
