Power outage. What matters?

When you have a power outage what is the thing you worry most about and how do you combat it. Mine seems to be temp. In the summer it doesn't matte as much but in the winter it's a different story. I use the old hot water bottle trick (float a bottle of it in the tank).

How about everyone else?

during the black out a few yrs back we went 7 days with no power at that time I did not have a generator I kept my tank aerated with a battery operated air bubbler .. I lost no fish at all during the black out while numerous LFS lost several.. I also use these while transporting fish and drip acclimation.. best 10 bucks I have ever spent for my tanks

Flow and temps
flow = oxygen
You can go several days without lights, only hours without flow

this is the best investment you can make on a budget comes on when the power goes off and it will stay running for at least 24 hrs

We have a generator and that will work fine as long as were home! An unknown power outage is my biggest nightmare with this hobby.

Couldn't agree more. I hate leaving my tank for more than a day in that rare case that something goes out while I'm gone. I do have two of the air pumps on hand just in case. I will however keep in mind using my car to run the tank if need be, now thats an idea.

i picked oxygen(flow).

having a couple cheap battery powered air pumps laying around can be a life saver.

Just keep in mind that temp, flow and oxygen are all interrelated. My worst nightmare is a power outage on a hot day. The hotter the tank, the less oxygen it can hold in saturation.

ok here is my invention of the day it adds flow and oxygen. I use the pump in my post above and I use a foot or so of PVC with and elbow at the top. I drill a hole in the pvc to accept a piece of hard line air tubing then attach an airstone at the bottom inside the pvc. I then install this in the tank so when the power goes out the pump turns on and not only aerates but gets flow going just like a powerhead water goes from bottom to the top and across. I have run this pump 24hrs without changing the batteries.

on a side note the PVC set up protects the tubing from fish chewing through the airline.

Using the car as a generator is an absurd abuse of .... wait, we're talking about fishes' life here. Use all means to keep them alive then

Sorry mate, can't claim you invented that. All undergravel filters for sale out there come with contraptions of the sort, where air bubbles feed 'lift tubes' than in turn create flow.
