Well just went to change the filters on my RO machine and come to find out I never had the RO membrane in it. I got a set of replacement filters with it and just assumed that all the filters were in place and it was ready to hook up and go. Must explain why I was making so much water so quickly. So now I wonder while it is running should there also be bad water leaving the machine while I am making good? Or should the Ball Valve Restrictor be completely closed?

ok without a ro membrand it is just filtered water by means of your prefilter media and the water that leavs through the waste water tube will be the same as the water that you are keeping

it is filtered as good as your pree filters or maby even di filters if you have them but not pure probly still showing high tds if you test for it

you can get ro membranes from home depot or lowes for about 25 to 50 bucks depending on brand and gph rating

your ro pure water will seem extreemly slow to ya and you will have a bunch of water that is considered waste but it will filter you water a lot better

Yes, you will get waste water, typically from a red tube. Typically, the waste water to good water ratio is from 2:1 to 3:1 (depending on efficiency of the system). That equates to 2-3 gallons of waste water to every 1-gallon of good water. I have heard that some people also collect the waste water and use it for clothes washing machine or watering plants...not a bad idea, just to much hassle for me right now.

Ball Valve Restrictor

So do I adjust the Ball Valve Restrictor so I get that kind of ratio? The Ball Valve Restrictor is located on the discharge line so if I open it all the way I get no good RO water but closing it all the way gives me no bad water. Is there a happy medium?

thanks

ok you should be able to leave it open and you should have a trickel of ro water coming out with a steady flow of waste water
the restrictor should have been installed by the factory to a set rate
