So i got at least 4 different types of algae. I have hair, red slime, bubble, and this weird red stick like algae. I was wondering what i should put in to help clean this algae mess up. I'm going to be getting margaritas snails soon to help the hair algae, but what else clears up those types of algaes? I already tried hermits, sally lightfoots and emerald crabs. My tank is a 28 gallon and my current stock list includes frogspawn, xenia, zoas, mushrooms, star polyps, rose bubble nem, pom pom crab, blue legged golden coral banded, candy striped pistol shrimp, and a yasha haze goby. And i plan on doing a pink streaked wrasse, a african flameback angel, a pair of snowflake clowns, and possibly a spotted mandarin.

Try to remove as much as you can by hand. Use a hose and suck it out before your water change. Have you tested the your mixed water? Are you using RO/DI. Sounds like high phosphates. Try reducing the time your lights are on. Also that is a lot of fish you are planning on putting in there. That 3" angel needs to be in a bigger tank.

You're going to need to really increase your water changes using only r/o water. Good news is you have a small tank. Unfortnately, your problem is only going to get worse when you add more fish as they produce much more waste than what you have now. Better to get a handle on it before fish. The angel is a bad idea (gets too big), as is the mandarin (very picky feeder).

A clean up crew really manages algae, it is not an algae eliminator...you need to remove the algae food source to get rid of algae, especially mutliple types.

well its not that bad, its just all over the back wall, and i dont want to manually remove the bubble algae because i dont want one of the bubbles to open up and release more spores.

i had a rusty and coral beauty with no problems, at different times, and they get larger than the flameback. Still gonna do it. And with the mandarin i'm going to train it to eat frozen in a breeders basket, if he doesnt accept frozen im just going to give it away to some with a large established system.

You know I almost said the same thing hours ago but figured what's the point. I just have to laugh and hope he enjoys all of his problems he has. No one can help him (even though he asks questions) because he knows better than all of us and will just do what he wants anyways.

Ok am I missing something? Did you ask the question or not? Is bad or "really not that bad? Really, are you for real? The advise you have been given is dead on. Follow it if you want it gone. Do what your going to do if its "not that bad" and you want more.

Rude by the way is ask for people's time and expertise then dismiss it because its not what you want to hear. Red Slime Remover works well. Good luck.

Alot of fish have special needs, the fish mentioned above, grow to be a pretty big size an all though it maybe small right now, it will eventually out grow your tank. To little space will stress the fish out and will more then Likely die. If your bio load is far to much for what size tank you have you will never get rid of the algae. Fish eat, poop et etc which will continuously cause a spike in ammonia and nitrates there fore killing off corals an other fish.. a lot of fish food also contain phosphates which is the main ingredient to algae. Always do water changes using r/o water. Minimum 15% specially in a tank your size, I would do it weekly an get rid of some of the fish an go through with what others tell you an I can almost promise you that you will notice a great decrease in your nuisance algae. Also make sure you have all the proper filtration going sump skimmer bio pellets or gfo! Good luck and I don't think they are trying to be rude, just looking out for you and your aquarium....and possibly your wallet :3195:

i can vouch for based on the part that he does do regular maintenance, he is very persistent on his water changes, he knows what he is doing and he will take good care of any fish he does purchase. When his fish do seem to grow out of his tank, he will be giving them away, or giving them to me. He will not keep a fish in a tank that it is unhappy in

im getting a .5" african flameback, ive seen it done, and i have did way worst one fish, when i was younger like 10, my dad always disagreed with me but he planned on buying all the stuff he needs for his 90 during the christmas season, so he ended up letting me buy a .5" blue tang and a 1" foxface, well since the 90 never happened because we couldnt find space for it i ended up keeping the blue tang and foxface until this summer when i really realized how cruel it was. When i took the fish to my lfs they said my blue tang was very god looking and ended up selling it for 140$ and the foxface for 50$. I do plan on setting up a 60 gallon shallow sometime during 2014 in my closet, it is the perfect size for one and i have a great stand idea that gives me room to fold my shirts and what not. I am one who is against putting tangs in small tanks now, but ive seen flamebacks thrive in nanos and i think he will be just fine until i set up the 60 gallon shallow, who knows maybe i wont spend my grad money on suspension, redline tires, and zr1 wheels, and exhaust, maybe ill spend it on a build.

I told you how to get rid of the algae. There is more waste than you are removing with water changes - that is feeding the algae. If you remove the food source, the algae will go away.

duckmaster - if he was good on maintenance and water changes using ro/di water, he wouldn't have these problems.

He changes 5 gallons a week on a 28 gallon, he cant afford ro/di but in a week he will be getting his ro water from me

Well that's part of his problem right there. One who knows everything about this hobby should know better than to use tap water. Now if he doesn't get those fish into a bigger tank, he'll continue to have problems. But imagine that, that's what everyone told him to do. It's funny how everyone else is wrong and doesn't know what they're doing, but yet we're not the ones with problems....

This should be common sense, but obviously some just dont get it. If you are trying to lower your phosphates and nitrates by doing water changes but changing that water with a high TDS (which you don't know what's in there), how are you not going to have problems? I guess that's why he ignored the "are you using rodi water" that was asked a bunch of times on this thread. I still just have to laugh hahahaha

And seriously if he is changing 5gl a week and can't afford to go to a lfs and pay $.50 a gl for a total of $2.50 a week, he's in the wrong hobby

Its not like he doesnt know he shouldnt use tap water, he does. Hes a highschool student and he invests all the money he can into his tank, if he could buy an ro/di system he would. All he is asking is about some remedies that have been proven successful. My question is, when you were 18 did you know everything there was to know about reef keeping? Did you listen to everything people told you? Hes trying to learn, and he is pretty good at taking care of his tank. Go easy on him, this is supposed to be a helpful community.
