Ok I just put 2 20lb bags of arago live in my seahorse aquarium. Is there actually any benefit from this stuff? I mean I know most of it is under water but that dont mean much is what I am guessing. I got the stuff cause My wife and I like the colors of the sand. That and it was cheaper than buying true live sand =]. it does say over 20 million bacteria but how do they know that? it did seem like it was loaded with copepods as I have not seen as many copepods in my tank as I did a couple hours after putting this sand in.

I find it weird how they can market that stuff as "live" when it sits on the shelf for week or months! If you drag a cup of "live sand" from your tank and let it sit for a month, how LIVE would it be then with no additional food sources and no aeration? Yeah, I'll be there is LOTS of bacteria breaking down all the dead and dying stuff.

I am certainly NOT claiming to know anything about that product, but it just seems like a gimmick to really markup the price of sand.

Am I completely off my rocker? Wait....don't answer that! [O][D]

Its not true live sand in the sense of having all the little critters but it does have the bacteria on it. Im sure its not just packed in water. Its probably some glucose solution or something that would feed the bacteria. I have had tanks cycle much faster using this compared to dry sand. I like just for the fact you dont have to do so much rinsing either.

I have used the arag alive sand too. Both times I started a tank with it, the tank cycled overnight. I have a theory that some of the bacteria breaks down into po4 a few months down the road and gives a little cyno bloom when that happens. Just a theory though. The sand is packed in a stable solution which keeps the bacteria alive, no pods or other bugs in it though.

The stuff works.. That`s the good thing about bacteria.. It can live with oxygen (aerobic) or without (anaerobic)..... Think about live rock and sand beds.. That`s what makes im work! Bacteria was here first don`t knock it.. Ed
