Just curious if anyone is currently using this diet or the south beach diet?

If you are would you mind sharing your favorite recipes, or the meals that you typically eat?

My wife was diagnosed with PCOS and was instructed by her doctor to follow the atkins diets for a few months and then she can continue following it just not down to the T.

Thanks
Bob

I have followed this diet religously in the past....and was very successful. However, during my wifes pregnancy I gained all but 15 of the 50 lbs I lost (starting consuming loads of carbs again)
I'll tell you what...go to their website

www.atkins.com

Check out their recipe pages!! Lots of great stuff there.
Also, you must read the Atkins book (New diet revolution)
This is a must read for a couple of reasons...One, understanding the science makes the diet easier, Two its motivating in itself to read the book and get excited about the future!

I started back on program last Thursday with a re-newed motivation and am experiencing the benefits already!!
If you are serious about following the program be prepared not to cheat!! Any cheating, especially in the first 2 weeks (Induction) will be detrimental to the results!
My typical menu each day consists of any of the following..
Breakfast= Eggs, bacon, cheese, tuna, ham
Lunch= Ceasar salad, chefs salad both w/ chicken, tuna, salmon etc.
Dinner= Salad, steak, chicken, fish, pork etc., fresh veggies etc.
Snacks= tuna, lunch meat, hard boiled eggs, cheese, some fruits.

I can't stress enough Read Read Read!!
Enjoy, the best advice is do it together!! You'll motivate each other.

Great,,, Hopefully it'll work for you again. Don't tell the wife this but I don't need a diet... 6'2" 180lbs. I'm an active person and l get a ton of exercise in everyweek.

BUT I'm going to follow the plan to support my wife. Especially since she's the one the does the grocery shopping and cooking and makes my lunch :D

Sometimes I wonder what she needs me for:D

Yeah we have that book and 1 or 2 others of his. She really doesn't have much of a choice about following it, so I'm going to follow it to,, hopefully it will make it easier for her.

Thanks for the encouragment!! Say how long did it take you to lose the 50lbs????

Bob,

Dana Carpender has a couple (at least) of Low Carb cookbooks out that you may want to check out. I think that I got them from the Library to test a few recipes first and then bought them. I especially like her recipe book full of 15-minute meals - a definite help! The chili burgers are great!

I second the Atkins site recipes - most are from the various Atkins cookbooks.

My husband and I lost 30 lbs each in 6 months... and now I'm pregnant :D so I'll be starting all over next year. It was very easy and we ate very well.

Hope this helps.

Laura

p.s. Your wife needs you for moral support, candy & flowers, etc., you know, the really important stuff!

Here is My thoughts, True the atkins diet works However I think that some people take it to the edge and consume such fat filled loaded with grease Junk that while they may loose weight they are causing things such as plaque buildup in there arteries. Side note while some stick to a ZERO carb diet those are the same people who feel mentally drained (i.e., slow thinking, etc.) why????? because brain function is in major part fed By Carbs Not fat protein etc. Also on a semi related topic if people did resistance training (weight) 30 Min a day 3 days a week they would see as great of success in weight loss and it wouldn't nessissate your diet as much, People when given the proper info can about double muscle mass within a year and Muscle burns fat. and for anyone here who suffers from Depression, anxiety, SAD etc. exercise has been proven to greatly help those conditions. Am I being preachy????? probably, but the few people I have talked to who have been on various diets Always are thinking Diet is the key when Exercise is a greater key, And to the few woman here (good for you fishkeeping rocks) don't worry about weight training causing you to look like a WWF wrestling She-male. your lacking a significant amount of Testosterone and thus wont be big and massive looking. The people you see that are woman and Huge are juicing (taking steroids) I.E. the man voice, lack of menstrual period etc. IM a meed major/study exercise as another interest. ...........................Interesting tidbit.........genesee County is the fattest in the state. have fun and be healthy and that's my public service
announcement  ;)

Adam,

A big part of the Atkins is daily exercise - starting out slow but working up to 30 minutes a day. It definitely helped to tone things up! We have a treadmill and did a few sit ups and push ups too.

I think that what really did it for us was getting rid of the junk food and eating more vegis and salads. The meat portions aren't out of control (at least ours weren't) and the first two weeks of addiction breaking were hard, but after that it was smooth sailing.

I know that many people diss the Atkins, so South Beach - developed by a cardiologist to avoid the plaque - may be a better way to go.

Bob,
I was at it about 6-7 months to lose 50 lbs. I got to what they call the plateau where I needed to further increase my excersise routine. I didn't cause the wife got pregnant and we spiralled out of control on the eating habits!
Well i did, she is a trim 125lbs soaking wet!
Anyway....I can say that i shouldn't be calling this a diet rather a lifestyle!
I choose the less fatty alternatives than bacon everyday for chicken and fish, salads and veggies.
It's really about breaking the addiction to carbs that was the hardest. I found myself less hungry all the time now!

I have done the atkins diet and it worked I have 5 family members doing it and it has worked for all of them.

Yes some people don't follow it correctly. It is meant to be a controlled carb diet. Only during induction are you supposed to be carb free. When you reach your target weight you can start adding carbs to your diet in the form of whole grains i.e. bread, pasta, rice. By slowly introducing your carb intake you can determine how much you can handle before you start to put the weight back on.

just my experience and thoughts

After doing it I manage to stay around 150 grams of carbs a day without gaining. I was taking in more than double.

good luck with whatever way you decide to go.
