Ok, I've got a new Mag Drive 18. Every since I started it, (about a week ago) it sounds like theres a piece of something in it. Like a small peice of coral or whatever.

Now, this is my first Mag Drive, and all I was told by the naysayers was that "their noisy" So I attributed this noise (as it's made it ever since I started it) to that opinion.

I know what your saying, just unhook it and open it up. I agree, but before I do that (it's all hard plumbed) I wanted to see if it's "just noisy"

Also, my return y's into two returns, one of them micro bubbles like a mo fo. Any ideas?

Thanks everyone!

I have a mag 18 and 2 mag 12's and none of them are noisy at all.....

microbubbles may be a slightly loose connection that is sucking air???? check your hose clamps.....
I've had a mag24,, now I have 2 mag 12s and none of them were noisey.
I have a Mag 24 for my return. It is noisy sometimes.

I have a Mag 24 closed loop. Quiet so far.

I have a Mag 18 running my skimmer. Quiet.
3 Mag 9.5's and no noise from any of them...other than a slight hum.
Man..I think it is hit or miss with alot of return pumps. I've been doing alot of research and I get varying opinions all all the pumps. Some have no problems with the Mag drives, some can't stand them.

I got a RIO 3100 (big mistake) for my 135....now I'm looking into a Mag 9.5. Rio is VERY loud. I have an Eheim pump on my skimmer which is virtually silent. I'd recommend Eheim hobby pumps..but they are about double the cost of a Mag. Setting up a 135 is very $$....just have to take it slow.

Just my opinion.
My 24 is loud.

Do you have any restriction on the line that is bubbling?
Thanks for all the quick responses, I'll try to backflush it a few times when I get home. Then maybe take er apart. I'm thinking maybe I'm getting air into that return somewhere, though I don't know where. Though that side does have a slow leak that I still have to take care of.

I can't believe for all my precautions, i.e. teflon tape, pvc cement, etc. I STILL have leaks. I'm now amazed they can plumb a whole house and not have leaks.

Thanks again!
I have 4 Mag18's and they are all "noisy" compared to my 2 1260 Ehiem's. I have noticed that the Mag's do tend to settle in and run quieter but they are never as quite as my Ehiem's. The Mag's tend break the ceramic shafts quite often. I replace 3 to 4 shafts per year on the 4 Mag18's I am running.
if back flushing doesn't work, take the pump a part and look at the impeller magnit (sp). the first one i bought had a busted magnit which the lfs replaced for free.

just a thought.

Most times they do have leaks:D
I have a a mag 36 and it is noisy. The pump is my finished basement and I can hear it in my bedroom upatairs and on the other end of the house. I'm looking to switch to a different pump. Either an Iwaki or Eheim.

Lets compare apples to apples Ehiems 1260 1/3 of mag 18 output.600gph compared to 1800 Mag should be noisier moving three times the water.;)
