I did not know this until i seen Fox 2 news tonight. This is from their web site.
Aquarium:
The Belle Isle Aquarium is the oldest continuously operating public aquarium in North America. This beautiful structure opened in 1904 at the intersection of Inselrue Avenue and Loiter Way across from the Greenhouse and next to the Conservatory.
On display are about 60 exhibits of 146 species of freshwater and saltwater fish. Exhibits include freshwater stingrays, electric eels, coral reef fish, and native Detroit River/Great Lakes species.
The Belle Isle Aquarium has received honors for its breeding and rearing of stingrays, and in 2002, hosted the surprise birth of two white-spotted bamboo sharks.
The Aquarium is open year-round and is part of the Detroit Zoological Institute and the Detroit Zoological Society.
See you do learn something new everyday!
