I did not know this until i seen Fox 2 news tonight. This is from their web site.

Aquarium:
The Belle Isle Aquarium is the oldest continuously operating public aquarium in North America. This beautiful structure opened in 1904 at the intersection of Inselrue Avenue and Loiter Way across from the Greenhouse and next to the Conservatory.

On display are about 60 exhibits of 146 species of freshwater and saltwater fish. Exhibits include freshwater stingrays, electric eels, coral reef fish, and native Detroit River/Great Lakes species.

The Belle Isle Aquarium has received honors for its breeding and rearing of stingrays, and in 2002, hosted the surprise birth of two white-spotted bamboo sharks.

The Aquarium is open year-round and is part of the Detroit Zoological Institute and the Detroit Zoological Society.

See you do learn something new everyday!

The shark was laying false eggs as usual and the caretaker just
decided to leave them in the tank one time and, surprise, they hatched.
It had not been around a male for over two years.
That is pretty amazing.

I need to go there and take my kids. I remember my grandparents use to take me there back in the '60s. I always liked going. Haven't been there since I was a kid though. I saw that on the news too.

I have been there many of times. It isn't the greatest but it is the oldest but not for long. The buzz on the street is detroit is going to build a new aquarium in downtown. I would recommend going there before it is shut down.

Like I said this is the what I heard but I heard it from Doug S. He is the Curator of Fishes of the Belle Isle Aquarium. He told me that they won't be celebrating their centennial year (1904-2004) because it is going to be shut down. He never gave a time table and I haven't heard anymore about it.

Went there last year and it was very nice. Really nice reef setups. It might be small but its worth it. Toledo Zoo has a nice aquarium also. Newport aquarium in Ky, just over the bring from Cincinnati is a nice one too. And of course Shedd's in Chicago is awesome.
