Was wondering if anyone here has had broken ribs, and just how frigin long they take to heal. Yesterday I was messing around with my 2 daughters. The three y/o was jumping off of the back of the couch and I WAS catching her, but this time I was watching my 7 y/o come at me then hit the brakes. Just then the 3 y/o landed on my right side feet first, hurt a bit but didnt think anything of it. Later that night I was in some major pain not being able to take full breaths and coughing alot which was super painful. Went to the doc today and I have 2 broke ribs, FROM A 3 YEAR OLD!!!! I laugh at the though myself as does everyone elso that hears what happen. But it is rather painfull and the meds are not working well. SO am I looking at weeks to heal here???Looks like I will be hiring some movers on the 28 instead of moving myself.

A few years back I was playing around with my brother wrestling around. Well the next day he decided to get back at me he was about 12 at the time so he waited for the perfect oppertunity.

I was tired that night and decided to take a quick nape on the floor next to the couch when all the suppen I felt him landing right on my chest knee's first. It was such a shock at first that I could not breath and after a few minutes the pain was not bad. The next day I felt like I was going to die, I could not take full breaths nor could I twist without going through severe pain. To make the long story short the doctor said I had 2 brocken ribs and 1 severly fractured ribs and not much he can do other then giving me pain medication and told me no lifting and take it easy they will only heal in time. The coughing and pain would come and go for about 1.5 to 2 years before I actually fully recovered. Granite I did not follow doctors orders by no lifting but who can stay without lifting for months even years. Fractured or brocken ribs are the worst pain to go through and the slowest healing process.....

Oh yea. I've had broken ribs as a teen when I use to ride motocross and I've broken my ribs from some pretty bad waterski crashes. You think water isn't hard till you hit it going 50 to 60 miles an hour trying to get to the next bouy in the slolam course and your running late and trying to make up time pulling extra hard crossing the wake and you go out the front over the ski. It gets scary when you can't breath and your in the water and you just had the wind knocked out of you while your cartwheeling across the water and under water. Meanwhile your buddies are laughing about what a cool crash you just had and have no idea how much pain your in till you need help getting back in boat.

Question
How long does it take for broken ribs to heal? I have the seventh and eighth rib broken midline and was wondering how long it will be before they will be completely healed?

Answer
It takes approximately four to six weeks for broken ribs to heal, depending on the person's age and general health. While treatment used to include a "rib belt" to hold the ribs, it is no longer used because it keeps a person from taking deep breaths. Treatment usually includes mild pain medication and some restricted activity. Because it sometimes hurts to breath with broken ribs, it is important to breath normally and do not smoke. The pain should gradually subside.
