I have a 4 bulb T5 high output light by Wavepoint. No fans of this model. It is 48" long. I run it on my 90 gallon. I assume that if I were going to go to a standard T8 flourescent that that would be less expensive. I am just wondering if this Wavepoint is very costly to run. It is not in all day because I have no corals. It is a fish only tank. I am considering going to a standard flourescent to save on electricity. This light is nice looking though.

It would be way cheaper to go LED then you would never have to replace bulbs and in a fish only system you can just get a really cheap LED lights and run it for pennies a day.

The trend is going with LED light especially for a fish only and if you looking for efficiency. you can find plenty of cost efficient setups for a 48". I have settled on T5 for growing coral but use led in many examples to supplement.

Cost is directly related to watts consumed. Last time I ran some numbers based on $ per kilowatt from my DTE bill, it was $8 per month to run 100w 24/7. I'm sure my electric has gone up some since I did that calculation.

Those are 54w bulbs x 4 = 216 watts total. That should be about $17.28 per month assuming you ran them 24/7.

A 10 hour light schedule would be around $7.20.

Aside from lights, heaters are the biggest cost and then your return pump or filter (they run 24/7).

Also if you use a lot of electricity, then you get bumped up a tier after 17kwh of use and get charged more after that.

Jumping to a standard light fixture with just two 40w bulbs is 80w total, will use 37% of the electrical usage of the larger fixture.

For a fish only tank, that T5 HO fixture is a lot of light.
