Besides the obvious, what are the main differences between RO, RO/DI and RO "drinking water" systems? Which is recomended for a marine aquarium? would 2 3 or 4 stage RO unit be OK for aquarium use? Since an RO can be had for about $100-200, compared to the others at $260-$600, Id rather save the money if an RO is all thats really needed in a marine aquairum? What is the difference in water quality, chemicals and impurities removed, etc between the 3 types?

RODI is the best for our set ups. Typically this is done in 5 stages. Anything more is overkill (I believe) There are 7 stage filters but they just preclean the water better before it gets to the ro membrane. The di portion is not cost prohibitive so I say throw it in. Ebay has the best deals around. Search aqua-safe of canada and you'll see. Many people on this site have these set ups with no complaints. Good luck.

if you want truly clean water you can get an ro/di and then instal a uv filter after the di unit. this helps to kill off any bacteria that gets through the ro membrane and di resin. we have found at work that a 10 watt uv filter after ro/di(which ours gets bacterium down to .004 parts per billion) that it gets the water so pure that bacterium is for the most part non existant. now the uv filter is not necessary but if you were to put an uv filter on you sw aquarium you would do more harm than good. buy putting the uv filter after the di but before adding the sw mix you get rid of the stuff you wanted to get rid of in the sw tank. thats just my take on people who think that they have to hae a uv filter on there aquariums. put it after the di and your safer. ok ive rattled on enough but the answer to your ? is ro/di is the best solution as it gets rid of the most amount of bacterium and chemicls.

Yep, RO/DI is the way to go. Walter at Air,Water, & Ice in Florida is where I got mine. It's a reefkeeper Typhoon 3 5 stage w/DI auto shut off valve, and it came with a hand held tds meter. It's in the first price range you stated above.
Good luck

I love my Aqua Safe system got it complete RO/DI for under 100 bucks and just ordered all new pre-filters. Fast shipping and great customer service. Get the reef unit for 65.00 bucks. My 2 cents.
