I have the chance to get about 50lbs of dry live rock from someone who removed it from their tank about 2 years ago. It's been sitting around in buckets. Mine for the taking.

My question is this: Is this beneficial to me? Should I use it and how do I prepare it? Boil it? Bleach it? Rince it? Or is it even worth it? What kind of problems should I expect?

It would be for a new tank w/sump and fuge and I would also add twice the amount of fresh or cured live rock.

Thanks,

Yeah it would be good base rock. Just rinse it off real well and scrub off everything you can. As long as your adding Live -live rock it will work fine. I paid 2.00 a pound for manmade dry base from the LFS about 6 yrs ago (newbe).

Just a few things to keep in mind:

1) If the LR was in a fish only with live rock tank, ie no corals, make sure the old owner didn't medicate the tank with anything that could hurt corals (ie copper based medication).

2) What kind of LR is it? If it is man made, many of the man made stuff I've seen is made with concrets and other material that slowing release stuff into the water. If you are getting dry figi rock then great!
