Looked in my tank just in time to see a thick green cloud rising out of my halimeada. Some of it did it yesterday I guess-went really white and didnt come back,Guess I shoulda pulled it. I pulled it out and put it in a pitcher of tank water to let the bugs out and it stinks! Tanks all cloudy now. Still got 1 small bunch left. Guess I probly wont bring any to the swap after all. Gotta stick to my chaeto-but the halimeada looks really cool in the tank:(

Yea, i had my caulepra go asexual one time in my 180, thats something i wouldnt like to experience again. I still havent learned my lesson though i still keep other species, besides my chaeto, so i have to end up pruning every week.

I believe that when they release the gametes its called sexual and when they break off and start a new plant or spread from runners and such it is asexual. asexual= not having or involving sex

To my knowledge asexual, usually happens, when the main stem of the plant, exceeded 12inches in length. That is why you have to continue pruning it, so this does not happen. But when it does go asexual, all those phosphates that it ate, are rereleased back into your tank. This is when my hair algae really started to jump start, because there were all those phosphates in the water to feed. I would definity check your phosphate level.

An RC search for Caulerpa AND Asexual: 115 hits.http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=3384944&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending

I'll leave it up to you to read through them.

If you're talking about Caulerpa metling down and turning into goo, it's sexual.

If it's reproducing by growing longer and longer and covering more area and occupying more volume, then it's vegetative and asexual.

This time I actually agree with most of what Dr. Ron posted in the thread Debbie linked to above.

LOL
I dont always agree with Dr. Ron either. He said my tank was crashing from
'old tank syndrom" and we would have to replace the live rock and sand and start all over again. We didnt.
It was "dirty tank syndrome" and we got it under control, and learned some lessons -like mechanical filtration IS neccesary.
And saved ourselves a "little" bit o money.
Thanks,
Debbie

No problem.
Now I've got some cyano starting on my sand. Gotta mix up some water for a change.
I got it out before it got the tank too bad and nothing seemed to be affected.
