ive been running sand and grave in different tanks for close to twenty years and just wondered if anyone has had good luck running a gravel bed that they dont vacuum all the time or if nitrates will always be high in gravel bed systems

I would think the problem with gravel is is is very course and leaves a lot of room for detritus matter to seep down into it. It is to dense for most sifters to travel through and without siphoning it; I think that it would simply be a nitrate factory in time. Not to mention it allows water to penetrate further into it. Where as sand will not allow water, rather current to penetrate so deep as in a DSB.
