Help hospital tank!

960 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  muttley000
I have some questions regarding my hospital tank, I just bought a 5gal tank to set it up as a hospital tank, I need to add the fish right away so I can start dosing the chemicals for ich should I add the fish right away or I have to cycle the tank like every other tank?
The tratment says it will take 6 days and no water change and iam concern about the amonia killing the fish.
Need help please!!

you really should cycle it a little but you got ich .. id set it up and get that fish solo and use some water a small piece of LR and some sand from your display tank...

are you useing a hang on filter system?
Short answer- Add the fish, dose for ich, test water daily and rely on water changes to keep parameters in check.

Pick up one of these ammonia alerts for the hospital tank. But still rely on daily tests.

Seachem Laboratories Am Alert

Long answer - Can your fish survive waiting it out while you cycle the hospital tank? It could take 4 weeks to cycle the hospital tank. Will they die from the disease before then? Many meds wipe out the biological filtration system, so meds can be problematic anyway. Keep in mind you're going to have to leave the display empty of fish for up to 6 weeks if it's ich you're dealing.
Can't you do large water changes and replace the medication in the new water?
I hope you don't have a reef or ever plan on one if you're dosing copper.
Well this is my plan for now i will be making frequent water changes large ones which will be half of the tank every 2 days, and test water every day, i will add some live rock to the tank as well as cheato to help with amonia and nitrite and nitrate.

If there is something i need to know please lmk, thanks everyone.
for the future, you can keep a couple of sponges from either a sponge filter or a hob filter in your sump, then if you have a quarantine emergency you have the filtration ready to go.
