I know that there is at least two of us (me and tszetela). Are there any other hombrewers out there in our ranks? I'm envisioning a semi-regular brewing event where us homebrewers get together at fellow reefers homes and discuss reefkeeping and hombrewing at the same time whilst brewing a large batch and splitting it... I can borrow the equipment necessary to do 15G, so that would be at least 3 carboys full... anyone?

Or, how about a reefers beer tasting event?

Jimbob, I've been brewing for about a year now and have made some fine tasting liquid gold. Maybe a tasting or swap at the Feb 7th Frag Fest?

I've been brewing ever scince I moved home from germany and realized I couldn't afford to keep buying the good stuff in bottles. I've got about 40 15 gal batches under my belt now. I use kegs for everything, pots, fermenters, and serving, and I'm sure that anheiser busch hates me because of it. I currently have 2 on tap. One is a hefeweissen made using yeast cultured from a bottle of weihenstephener, and a tripple decoction mash, pain in the a$$, but you gotta use the decoction if you wan the right body and flavor in the hefe, (took me 3 lame batches to figure that out). Also an amber or pale ale (whatever you wanna call it), american style, hoppy and oaky as hell (lots of french oak in the secondary). I love it. I also make alot of browns, wits in the summer time, belgian dubbles and strong darks when the stock pile is big enough to let a batch sit for 6 months, IPAs, ect. Always all grain. I'm totally interested in a swap or something. Does anybody deal with soda kegs. I have a few of them and if your making 15 gal batches, I think they would work great for trading. I haven't made a batch in a few weeks cuz my false bottom colapsed duing the last one and am in the process of outfitting a new one. With the new tun I should be able to get 30 gal of atleast 5% from one mash. So finished product will be 2 3/4 full half barrels. I will definatly bring a growler or 2 to the swap though. I think it would be great to see how some other people brew as well. Maybe we could set up an event and everybody bring their own 5 gal bucket/carboy and we brew and when it comes time to transfer to the fermenter, we split it amongst the buckets/carboys and take it home.

Tim,
Ya ever look into getting the natural gass burners out of old hot water heaters. I'm still stuck using propane, because I rent and I don't think the landlord wants me tapping into the gas line (he's already pi$$ed about the second floor fish tank and water bed). But I understand they work great and you can usually find them on the curb waiting for pick-up.

Not to sound lame, but I got a "mr Beer" for Christmas (not even near the same league as what you guys have). I was wondering is it possible to make a decent brew in one these little DIY kits? Im just starting my first batch now.

Hey Chuck... you're on your way... with a little bit of knowledge and understanding, yes, you can make a respectable homebrew in one of those Mr. Beer systems. It won't be the same as the high quality stuff you get in the stores, but it will be better than a lot of the crappy beers out there.

Lil sugestion chuck, don't use the dry yeast packs that come with the kits. They make crappy beer and can contaminate and destroy the batch. Buy a 6 dollar tube of white labs yeast, or a wyeast pitchable tube, both liquid yeast, and your beer will be 10X better. The guy at the brew store should be able to give you some advice on which culture goes with which style of beer.

Are there any brew stores around Ann Arbor? Is there a way to add carbonation w/o getting in to the expensive setups you guys have? "mr. Beer" states that their carbonation occurs naturally around room temperature and dectreases as the temp is decreased. Personally I like cold beer with a moderate amount of carbonation.
