I stopped in, needing some peppermint shrimp.

It was sad to see (are you ready?)...

An extremely malnourished Moorish Idol (suprise) for sale.

As well as a sweetlips (good idea for someone that wants a 3 foot fish in a couple of years)

AND an octupus (don't get me started). NO I'm not kidding.

It was just amazing to see all 3 on one trip, I had to share.

As much as I would love to have an Idol, I just cant imagine why they would stock such a fish? Its almost doomed, garunteed! I think I would avoid this store since they lack ethics in their stocking procedures.

too bad the humane society couldn't do anything about that. I have only read about 3 people I think that have been able to maintain one of those fish. Longest I've heard of so far is 4 years I believe. From what they said, that fish eats better than their family does. They do grocery shopping for their family, and then for their idol. Poor fish is most likely doomed.

As long as people buy them stores will sell them. Why blast the store why not go after the collectors? Or the people catching these fish? I have frequented greenwoods in eastpoint, and it is a mom and pops place. The owner is a very nice person, and will do more than most will as in helping you out.
I don't think they have any affiliation with the other one.
Hell i see tons of dying or dead fish. In EVERY store i have been in has had a dead or dieing fish in it, what can ya do?
If ya wanna be so conscious, Just think on how many fish and corals died just so you can have them in your tank.
I am not trying to be a prick, I am just stating my opinion as you guys are.

Under new management deal is their were two people that owned greenwoods in eastpointe/warren, one of the partners did the other a favor by buying their share in the buisness from them and from what i was told fired her after that. This was what i was told by one of the employees there. as for the other store it is owned by the sister of the lady who got fired. also info from the same employee.

Well then I'll run out and get one!

Maybe 1% of the Gonioporas that have been imported do well in someone's tank for a couple of years too...

Nothing personal, and I realize that you might not actually have been advocating keeping them, but just because it might be possible doesn't mean someone should try it. Most people simply don't have the time, knowledge, experience, space, or money to make a good attempt.

Unfortunately, as you've no doubt seen on the boards, those who want to try to keep animals that almost never do well in captivity tend to ignore posts about failures and be inspired by posts that seem encouraging.

I agree that people shouldn't try to keep idol fish! But there has been alot of progress in SW tanks in the past years. Most corals that we have on the market today that are considered hardy or good starter coral could have been really hard to keep back in the day. But over the years things change!

But I don't agree with keeping one if your not a master of the trade. Which I don't know how you could even size your self up to being called that. But if your going to keep one I think that you should at least be doing studies on them and try to figure out more about the species and tell otheres your findings. So maybe the idol fish can be more understood.

I know someone that has one but he has more infested into his tanks than his house alone. He feed his fish more than he feeds himself. But I think you get my point!
