I am in need of an overflow box but I am not in the position to buy one as of now (still trying to catch up on some bills) I however have a few pumps laying around the house, don't laugh they are RIOs here is what I was wondering.

(1) would it be possible to use a 1700 pump to pump down to the wet dry in the sump refugium and then have a 3100 (not fully opened) pumping back up to the main tank?

(2) Would a set up like that be asking for trouble.

(3) Is it possible to run long term like that or until i get an overflow box?

Thanx for any assistance that can be granted.

I would NOT suggest this your REALLY asking for trouble. If one pumps fails then your going to have a real mess. If one pumps too much, lets say while your at work, your in trouble. I would suggest getting some diagrams of an overflow box and doing a DIY project. You can get plexiglass from HD for about 5 bucks and even pick up some silicone caulk from there too make sure its clear color. Also make sure you use a thicker plexiglass at least 1/4" thick, that will help when you are glueing it together. Dont use lots of glue cause silicone gets really messy a nice smoothe beed is what your trying to achieve. good luck.

Caribbean guy

Come on over and I will loan you my overflow box from my Amiracle SL-150. You can buy the box new, but it costs $60-70. Mine was used just 2 weeks. It doesn't even have algae on it! LOL!

I even have some extra tubing if you are using a sump. Come on over and get it! I would love to help you out! [D]

Thanks Sunny, I may just do that. I can always repay you. Paint I tore down my 150 reef in an effort to cut costs and my wife has decided that I can continue with my tanks butkeep the 150 a FO. I agreed but wanted to use what I have available to do the sump I have everything except the overflow box. I just wanted some ideas as to how to get the water from the main tank through a DIY wet dry through the sump refugium and back to the main tank.
