Well I went into the Fish Doc's in Canton today and saw this huge whil;ing Monti. It was orange with a nice white bleached area all about. I thought.... You can rebuild him better, larger, more colorful...

SO I got the colony 50.00.

I hope to salvage it. It broke apart into two halves though.

I reef diped it and cleaned the algea with my trusty toilet brush (only used for the tank).

you can seee all the damage to this thing.

I just could not let the thing be broken up into frags. My hope is that it will resume growth and cover the bleached area again.

Good luck, Neo...I think you're going to need it. Those pieces look pretty bad, even to my untrained eyes! I picked up some MH lighting today, so when the 55 gets up and cycled, I'll be coming to see oyu about some SPS frags!

Wish me luck!

they wanted 60.00!! ouch

I think that they are salvagable though. its just a matter of getting them into a good tank. the tank at that store was prety nasty looking.

thet were going to just frag it all up too. I was told that the one half was worth 50.00 because it was only slightly bleached.

Another funny thing I went to pet connection to today. A newbie was asking them what a good filter would be for a 90 gallon. guess what they said and sold him?

One of there wet dry filters with the bio-balls tower!! It was hilarious to listen to the explanations they were giving to him also!!

It goes to show that some people still dont get it.

I wanted to tell him to jump on our site and look for the information but felt weird about it.

Yeah, they seem to really like those foamy bio-ball filters. I saw a 12 gal nano with PC bulbs at a LFS, but it had "a great built in filter, with foam, carbon, and bio-balls", with no heater. I may have bought one if it had a built in skimmer instead of the foamy bally thingy.

Could have been a nice Christmas present for one of the kids.

the LFS do need to make money. I know that they push people toward certain things. I just think they really should know more than they do.

I also know that 50.00 was outrageous for that piece. I did it to try to save it though. I have dome this a few times with pretty good success. We shall see what happens.

I agree, they do need to make money. It's fine as long as the buyer is knowledgable, but it's real easy for a newbie to get the wrong stuff and have a disaster right from the start.

Maybe that's why some of the stores I've been in don't like "internet people".

I know they do not like us or these boards because there knowledge is some times outdated compared to what we are all doing in our systems.

I think another reason for pet shops not to like the boards is because it incourages competition as we reefers gain information about their shops. Like everything, "word of mouth" travels much faster on the net than by normal means. While only a small percentage of us reefers in Michigan participate on these boards, we sure do spread information. I can see where these boards would be incredibly beneficial in more populated areas, like Detroit, where there is more than one reef shop in a 50 mile radius. These boards would really promote competition. I rarely get to Detroit but I got a taste of that on my recent visit. A few fellow reefers emailed me on a few shops and I was amazed. I realize that Detroit is not the "mecca" of coral reefing but I can't tell you how much cheaper the prices were and how much better the selection was. I am very happy with my local reef shop but a little competition would be great for the customers.
Then again, maybe I've had too much to drink.

Yes,

The competition aspect is a large part I think.

But I really still believe it has to do with the fact that you can go to a LFS prepared with the knowledge you need and not get stuck with a load of stuff that is not needed. I also think that sometimes reefers with a great deal of knowledge and experience can be intimidating to some employees and owners.

I knew what I was doing today when I bought this piece so them selling iot to me was no big deal. What if someone without a good knowledge base saw it though, would they have sold it to them knowing how much care it is going to need now? that is what I always question.... Are the places I go ethical in their practice? I think they were today because they sold the coral to someone who wanted to salvage it and discussed with me my plans for saving it. SO today they get a nod of approval from me.
