The state of Michigan has introduced a new regulation requiring those who sell live aquatic organisms to register with the Department of Natural Resources with descriptions of the organisms they intend on selling. At times it is unclear if this legislation refers to aquatic life in the traditional sense of freshwater, or if they are requiring individuals who intend on selling marine life to register as well.

I have reached out to those tasked with handling questions on the new registration for clarification on several definitions and their use in several subsections of the legislation to determine how this will impact those of us in the marine aquarium hobby.

Either way, I am pleased that the state has made this registration in an attempt to reduce harmful introduction of non-native species into our waterways. Certainly the introduction of nuisance species form the hobby has negatively impacted our reputation in the past.
