Recently my nitrate spiked big time. Everything else tested exactly where it should be. I looked for anything dying and all is accounted for. I know it can be caused by excess algae. I did a 50% water change. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions or experience to get this down somewhat quick. Any feedback/help would greatly be appreciated.:( :(

What was your level? Size tank and inhabitants and setup would help us to understand.

120 w vho lighting. level was over 100ppm. four clowns, pacific blue, powder blue, yellow tang, red sea tang, frogspawn, christmas tree rock, 6-8 mushrooms and a few cleaner shrimp. I've got more, just too much to list.

I have a refugium and am running a EuroReef skimmer. Came home today and found my Riteri had died and killed all my fish except the clowns. Lost all my tangs, scooter blennies. shrimp seem to be fine and don't think it killed any of the coral.

not a good day. The anemone looked great last night, eat his usual squid for dinner. There is a small possibility that it was stuck in a powerhead. By time I got home tonight there were no signs of him at all. Just a skimmer out of control and a bunch of dead fish.

My rose Bubble did that-found a crack where a lever had broke off and got into the pump. What a mess. I was home and caught it right away so nothing died but the anamone. I would have cried coming home to that.
What size is your tank, and how long has it been running?
Have you added any rock lately? Did you add several of the fish at once?

120 gallon, lost a powder blue, yellow, red sea, and a pacific blue tang that I've had a least a year. also killed my plate coral about 10in diameter. all the other coral seem to be doing fine. The skimmer has calmed down quite a bit now.

wow. I had my nitrates up over 200ppm before and never really had a problem. although I did add a refugium right after it did that and it took care of my nitrate problem.

I see you live in spring lake. I helped build the new school you guys had built 7 years ago. I helped with spring lake, cedar springs, and comstock park schools 7 years ago.
