I bought this pump from fellow reefer, new in box. Just got tank plumbed using pump as closed loop on 180. The pump is quite loud. I then placed pump submerged in tank with no pipes at all and still loud. Next step inspected and replaced impeller with no luck. Is this normal for large mag pumps or bad pump?? Thanks for the input.

Is the pump hard plumbed or soft with flexible PVC or tubing ? You maybe hearing it vibrating everything else. A Mag 36 has a lot of torque and will twist pipes and vibrate. You should pace it on top of something like foam. Do you have the return line at full capacity if not that will also cause more vibration.

I would set it on foam and replace the rubber sleeves they won't last in Saltwater. They will leach things go with 1 1/2" Flexable PVC AKA Spa Tubing. To a male adapter with Teflon tape. The foam should be dense.

My cocern is that with the pump submerger with no pipes what so ever, as it comes out of the box. The pump is loud enough to be heard 20+ feet away. I don't feel that is normal.

BAD PUMP

I think you have a bad pump. Thats the problem with buying used stuff. I had a used mag drive 12, it went bad (leaking electricity) and ended up killing all but 2 of my fish with stress. (that was over $2,000 in rare fish) I found out the hard way when I got shocked. I would not use the pump.

I just sold a EuroReef skimmer to a friend and told her if you don't like it, let me know an I will take it back. I bet you did not get a gaurentee like that.

I had a 36 for my 90 gal. I had it in a 40 long sitting on a mouse pad. It probly isnt a bad pump, they are loud. I had my tank in the wall and in my old house it could be herd anywhere. Just make sure you dont have to much pressure on it as to force it against the bottom of the tank, that was one of my probs and fixing that made it a bit more quiet. They are loud but can move a massive amount of water, hence why it is in my pond in the back yard:)

Thank you for the replys. This pump is way to loud to live with so option A: use for mixing water really fast. B: Door stop C: Smash with hammer always good for stress relief. Thank you again.

Hello, I understand your problem completely, I bought a brand new Mag 36 and it is simply too loud, haven't used it since the first day of setup. Replaced the impeller, ran it for a while, still too noisy. I went with a Quiet One 6000 and was completely satisfied. The Mag is still sitting in a box collecting dust.

I believe the Mag is rated at a max head of 25ft with 3600GPH max flow. The Quiet One is I admit less powerful at at max head of 12 feet I think and a max flow of approx 1500GPH, but I guess it depends on what you really want to use it for. All I needed it to do was push water in a closed loop through my external filter. The quiet one had more user friendly inlet/outlet design, it runs completely silent ( and I mean quiet) and suprisingly does not generate an excessive amount of heat. I run it on a 240gal so that might help with the heat dispersal.
