A while ago a fellow reefers here on MH informed me the Blue Tangs will eat zooanthids. Well as you guys know, my tank is nothing but zoos and shrooms. In shock and amasement because I had never ever heard or read this, I trusted this reefers knowledge and began my odyssey of catching my Blue Tang to remove him. A week later, I spoke with a local store owner and he told me a guy out west I think with the largest North American reef who regrets everyday to placing Blue Tangs in his reef. Why ? He also confirmed that they eat zoos.

I began to noticed the gradual disipation of the rarest zoo colony I have ever seen. It was strange though, there was no decay, just missing or puncture polyps. I sat in the dark with just my blues on and watched my blue tang swim by repeatdly to eat the zoos on this one particular colony. There was nothing I could do but shoo him away. I was planning to break my entire reef down over the holidays just to catch him because none of my traps were working. Well, that entire colony has been destroyed by him. I came home today and saw him munching on my hot red zoos, the first thing I did was run to my room to grab the 40 caliber, LOL, but I knew I would lose the whole kit & kaboodle if I used it. I had to resort to drastic measures and came up with a plan to catch him in just 5 minutes, and yes, it worked. I won't say what I did, but I caught him in less than 3 minutes. He is in a bucket and heading back to the store tomorrow. Moral of the story, DO NOT PLACE A BLUE TANG IN YOUR REEF IF YOU HAVE ZOOS, OR SHOULD I SAY ZOOS YOU WANT TO KEEP. He didn't munch on all of them, just one or two colonies which happen to be my rarest. I know the books, store owners and the pros say they are safe, but I saw it with my own eyes.

You make the call.

Don't mean to cause a scare you guys. Tangs are reefs safe, it appears that the Hippo slid through the cracks when someone made the reef safe list many years ago. I don't believe in spreading rumors, but this is the real deal my friend. This is the only tang I have ever heard of and have seen the proof that they will consume zoos.

well here are my ?'s about this. was the tang big enough that it would swallow the zoos whole? Did it swallow them whole or did it just munch at one until it was gone and then go to the next polyp? How big was your hippo? Do you think that it was not eating enough regular food (which I doubt you will answer yes to this ?)? I am mostly wondering if size matters as to if a hippo tang will eat zoos or not.

The tang is 4 inches long and very healthy. Eats like a dog on all the food that goes in the tank, cyclop, mysis, flake, phuto and a few others in my rotation. Didn't swallow them whole, picked and munched at several until they were all gone and went on to the next. Why would you doubt if I would answer you ? It has been in my tank for a long time and it has grown to twice its size since I bought it. Regarding whether or not size makes a difference or not, I look at it this way. Emerald crabs are reef safe hebivores until they reach the size of a quarter, at that time they become carnivores as well. I have seen them eat zoos with my own eyes. I have had a ton of heated discussions with people who said I was dead wrong a year or so ago. Many of them have since apologized once they viewed their emeralds eating zoos as I stated long ago. If I know something will do my reef some harm, even if I know it won't happen until they are a certain size, I will remove it from my tank or opt not tp put it in. Mind you, others on RC and the store owner who spoke with the guys out west have experienced what I have with the Hippo. I'm just sharing the message is all. If you feel safe wih your Hippo around zoos, that is ok my friend. Again, just wanted to share my experience.

sorry I ment to say that you will probably tell me that the tang is not underfed sorry for the confusion. my problem is that I dont want to get rid of my tang nor my zoos. so I am stuck in a dilemna of do I want to start a fowlr aquarium or not. I wanted to start a 180 gallon reef and sell my 72 gallon bow front but now I may keep the bow front and turn it into a fowlr again. Like you pointed out I really dont want to find out the hard way that tangs will eat corals.

Hey Will, it's only the Blue Hippo that I know of that will eat zoos. Have no knowledge at all about other tangs and I would say they are safe.

Reefguy, when the main body of my emeralds, every single on of I saw them do it also.
