A while ago a fellow reefers here on MH informed me the Blue Tangs will eat zooanthids. Well as you guys know, my tank is nothing but zoos and shrooms. In shock and amasement because I had never ever heard or read this, I trusted this reefers knowledge and began my odyssey of catching my Blue Tang to remove him. A week later, I spoke with a local store owner and he told me a guy out west I think with the largest North American reef who regrets everyday to placing Blue Tangs in his reef. Why ? He also confirmed that they eat zoos.
I began to noticed the gradual disipation of the rarest zoo colony I have ever seen. It was strange though, there was no decay, just missing or puncture polyps. I sat in the dark with just my blues on and watched my blue tang swim by repeatdly to eat the zoos on this one particular colony. There was nothing I could do but shoo him away. I was planning to break my entire reef down over the holidays just to catch him because none of my traps were working. Well, that entire colony has been destroyed by him. I came home today and saw him munching on my hot red zoos, the first thing I did was run to my room to grab the 40 caliber, LOL, but I knew I would lose the whole kit & kaboodle if I used it. I had to resort to drastic measures and came up with a plan to catch him in just 5 minutes, and yes, it worked. I won't say what I did, but I caught him in less than 3 minutes. He is in a bucket and heading back to the store tomorrow. Moral of the story, DO NOT PLACE A BLUE TANG IN YOUR REEF IF YOU HAVE ZOOS, OR SHOULD I SAY ZOOS YOU WANT TO KEEP. He didn't munch on all of them, just one or two colonies which happen to be my rarest. I know the books, store owners and the pros say they are safe, but I saw it with my own eyes.
You make the call.
