Jeesh thats depressing, I'm sure not gonna show the wife that!

Although it is kinda cool to listen to non-reefers and kids oogle over the tank.

Came home for lunch today and never did eat because 2 of my wifes friends were asking questions about the various corals and my newly hosting clown pair. :)

Must have a lot to do with the lighting for reef systems(i.e.MH). I have my tank in the basement. Keep in mind I just upgraded to a 180 from a 45 so I am not sure what the impact will be on it now. Hopefully not a huge amount.

I compared all 2003 (didn't have the tank) and 2004 (did have the tank) I only have 110 watt pc and 75 watt NO. I didn't see a difference at all. some months it was more some months it was less. So as far as energy cost goes I only have about 20 dollars more this year so far.

I had a few months in the summer when my bill was higher but the air was on more this year then last seemed to be a bit more humid. So I attribute the higher cost to that not the tank seing that every other month was relatively the same.

I am not complaining a bit. :D

Oops knowone ever told me I had to count everything.

In that case its probably about 50 to 100 a month.

So far I'd say it's costing me over $2000 a month for my 90 gallon.

But then I'm just starting and in this first month I've been buying all the components (tank, pumps, lights, equipment, supplies, etc) :p

Good one rburn99:D

I figured all mine are @$247 a month. But I have too many mag drives. I started by getting rid of all my beckett skimmers first and now I'm going to be switching to Sequence 750 series for returns and closed loops. Those will save me a lot of $$$.

Hey Bob, how are the Sequence vs. Iwaki pumps?

Is there a big difference in Magnetic vs. Electronic ballasts?

To all, my number was not just electric, not just food, not just one thing. It is ALL INVOLVED OPERATING COSTS rolled into a one month type of price.

And Yes you can lease a Honda Civic cheaper per month than what I spend running my reef.

electric bill

I just got my bill and it was $219 for a month. $65 of that was for air - it is on a seperate meter. I would guestimate that it costs at least $120 for the tanks. I have a 90 gal with 2 - 400 watt MH and a 22 gal with a 400 watt MH - that's 18 watt per gal. I should consider downsizing the light in my 22 gal.

For my 75 with 2x250w MH, 2x110w VHO, and various pumps I have about $21/month in Electic. Probably about $20 in food/additives. I'm not sure how much in water. So I figure about $45-50 / month for my 75g.

I love living in Michigan and getting relatively cheap electric.

Tony,

The Iwaki100RLT uses 395watts to push the 2000gph and the Sequence 3600SEQ12 uses 160 watts to push the 3200gph. The Iwaki is $354 plus shipping and the Sequence with the marine seals is $194 plus shipping. The Ampmaster3000 is $269 plus shipping and it runs on 116.5 watts to push its 3000gph. So I would say the Sequence is the best bang for the buck. Hope this was enough info for you. Heres a link for the Sequence pumps.
