I have a 75 gallon acrylic with a built in overflow. I started to notice this weekend that it periodically takes in air. Every 30 seconds or so it makes that sucking noise like the bathtub draining or something. Ideas on how to fix that?

Increase or decrease the flow from the returns. You'll have to play trial and error with it to get it right.

You could also put a sponge around the tube if there isn't one already. If there is try raising it up or down to slow/speed up the flow.

Valve...

What you need to do is add more resistance between the inlet to the overflow and it's outlet. a valve would work great. This will cause the water level to increase behind the baffle and the sucking noise will dissapear but due to the increased water depth the pressure will increase and the original flow rate will be acheived.

Re: Valve...

What kind of valve? Where can I get one? Right now there is the overflow with the outlet at the bottom and a tube with a sponge on it hooked to the outlet.

I have a dual external overflow box and I just cut a piece of 18" airline and fed it down the tubes so only about 4" is sticking out. After about 15 minutes of the air getting out and settling the flow was back to normal and all sound gone.
