Hello fellow Michigan Reefers!

Question for everyone- I have an excess of old dried out live rock from my 100g that I want to use in my new reef tank which is already up and running. After I complete the acid washing process I would like to possibly throw a little paint/color onto those new chunks of rock so that they will look 'similar' to the group of live rock I already have in the new tank.

I don't necessarily want to make them match perfectly I would just prefer to not have white live rock throwing off the overall look of my aquascape. I just want to throw a bit of color on them and as usual let coraline take over in time.

Any and all suggestions welcome, I appreciate it.

Personally I wouldn’t do this for a whole bunch reasons. Mainly because the paint would seal off the rock and limit its filtration capabilities. Honestly it will match the existing rock in less than a month. If you really want to I would go with krylon fusion paint and let it dry for quite some time before using it.

drs is correct, and i'll go beyond that recommendation and say not to use any paint at all (including the krylon). Paints sometimes use metals like chrome for color that may/will eventually seep into your water column and could potentially kill or at least irritate your fish and corals. Can't you just throw them in your sump or something?

Just stick the rocks in your sump for a month or so. Simple and no risks.

I agree with the others...don't paint. They'll look like the other rock in a few months...or if you don't want to look at it throw it in your sump for that time.

I wouldn't paint either, sump it is.
