I assume they are garbage but just curious. I realize with a regular moderate water change it is not an issue but I still wonder if there are any good alternatives for the Nanocube.

it's not a protein skimmer........ it's just a surface skimmer......

You will be much better served by waterchanges.

A skimmer will just strip the water of nutrients before the animals get it. I agree, keep up on water changes.
