Currently I am trying to sell my 125 and get a smaller tank but it is not going well. I may end up keeping the 125. If that is the case I want to change the color of paint on the back of the tank. Currently it is a light blue color and I would like to paint something darker on the back. Any suggestions how I would remove lighter paint?

you can try to chip it off dry first.. but sometimes that can be impossible..
you may want to take some newspaper and cover the top of the tank.. tape the edges so you dont get any in the tank..
and then you can use some windex or even just some soapy water in a spray bottle on the paint and then razor blade it off.

it should come of pretty easy either way.. just depends on which method you prefer..
I always like making sure the top was covered and taped closeed though.. always affraid of getting foriegn stuff in my tank!

good luck..

~ If we were moved in our new house already Id love to take that 125 off your hands.. but we still need to find a house first..
good luck with the sale as well!!

Is any of this different for a painted acrylic?

I had good luck using a razor blade dry. Back in the day I scraped off my husband's crazy looking paint job on his glass 55 gallon - it just was not at all appropriate for a saltwater tank. I think the paint he had used was some type of enamel. Every bit of it came off that way. It was just very messy, make sure you have a vacuum cleaner close. Lots of paint shavings.

I have no clue what you would use if your tank is acrylic.

I think it also depends on how it was painted.. If you used regular paint and a brush or roller use a razor blade and cut a piece away at the bottom. You should be able to just pull the rest of by hand.

If it was spray painted on then I think I'd try using paint thinner on a rag. I spray painted a 10g and I couldn't use a razor blade to get it off. I used paint thinner on it without a problem. I don't know if paint thinner can be used on Acrylic or not?? I don't see why not, I'm just not positive...

I wouldnt use a razor blade on acrylic one slip and you could take a chunk out of the tank. Have you tried a small test spot of putting the darker paint over top of the lighter. This may make the appearance darker by letting less light through. Just a suggestion.
