I use a Culligan RO system. I've used it for 4 years and love it. I added a 12 gallon tank so I always have water on hand. They were renting the system for $12 a month (including free filter changes) when I was looking but I decided to buy the system. I've had the water tested numerous times through a 3rd party and it comes back in the advertised numbers.

We have a APEC system from freedrinkingwater.com. Its a great unit. We have had it close to a year. No problems with it at all. We did buy the extra large tank for it, that makes it more conveinent.

Thanks for your posts so far, hope we get more. Myself and others will appreciate it. I'm thinking of buying a G.E from Home Depot for $157.

e-bay

I just ordered a unit from aquasafecanada.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20684&item=4301159840&rd=1

Ed is really nice and very helpful.

I also got a booster pump with it.

Unfortuantly, I can't tell you how it works, as they just shipped it yesterday (same day I ordered).

Though, I am sure that there are enough people that have ordered from e-bay, and they can tell you that e-bay prices are cheap.

From the research I've done, you get a great unit for cheap on e-bay. I have also found that the permeate pump doens't help nearly as much as the booster pump.

I can also tell you from first hand experience, that if you have really hard water (like I do at school, 350 ppm) that I burned through a DI tank in about 150 gallons (3000 grain tank), and I really needed to get an RO unit to put in front of it.

I can't believe that those units on ebay work as well as the more expensive ones. I would sooner buy from a local dealer any how. One with standard filters that I could buy at Home Depot or Lowes.

I have one of the Aquasafe units from ebay. I have had it about 3 months now with no problems at all. And the filters are standard filters that you can get any where that sells ro filters.Mine is a 75 g.p.d. unit with the holding tank. It is a 5 stage ro/di unit with the faucet.

I also purchased from Aquasafe Canada. It works flawlessly and uses standard 10" cartridges that are available anywhere. The only bitch about it that I have is the DI filter is not standard or refillable. You have to get these from Ed. They are not expensive tho.

There are 2 basic types of membranes out there.

There is the CTA membrane which is chlorine tolerant, and the Then Film Membrane which is not.

Dow owns the patent on the TFC membrane. Commonly known as a FilmTec membrane. These are the membranes that are used in most residential applications. That is why they come with a carbon prefilter to take out the chlorine.

The CTA membranes as a gerneral rule do not have as high a rejection rate as TFC membranes.

Because Dow owns the patent, no matter who you buy from, if they use a TFC membrane they are all pretty much identical.

Some just mark them up more I guess.....

So look for the type of membrane that is being used in the RO unit and see if it is a TFC. More than likely it is a rebranded FilmTec. I am not %100 certain as to if Dow has sold menufacturing rights to this type of membrane. The last I checked, which was over a year ago, all TFC membranes were made by Dow.

Water Bills will go up noticably. A RO system only actually uses about 1/3 of the water, the rest goes down the drain as waste. Bummer. I don't have a water bill so it doesn't affect me.

premate vs pump

Does anyone have any experience using a booster pump and a premate pump?

While I don't currently know my tap PSI, I am on well water and I'm getting a booster pump.

I'm wondering if it will help signifigantly if I also get a premate pump.

Really happy with the replies and responses we've gotten on this thread, but I can't believe out of 118 views only 8 have ro units. I really wish I could get more impute. Especially from the more seasoned members. I really think this information could be good for new members and members that have been in the hobby for awhile that are interested in buying a new ro unit.

I don't have an RO/DI in my possesion yet, but will have one as soon as UPS will get their act in gear.

I can't wait till I get the system hooked up at school. I'm going to run it quite a bit in the beginning. We have 8/10 PPM iron.

Once I have first hand experience with the iron, I think I'll be able to pull the research I've done and put it all together into something useful.

Between, talking to some people localy and ventors else where...I've found a lot of people that don't have a clue, and others that really seem to know their stuff. First hand experience will tell what's really going on.

Hopefully I'll have it all set up by the beginning of next week.

I got a 100 GPD w/ DI, tank, water tap, booster and extra filters. I ordered it from aquasafecanada.

I think that the prices and quality is probably the same from most vendors. Though there are a few extra tweaks depeding on the vendor.

Honestly, I sent e-mails to many of the e-bay vendors asking questions. Aquasafecanada was the ONLY company that sent me an e-mail response. I was also able to call them, since they post their phone number on the e-bay auction.

I was able to talk to Dave and to Ed. I was pleased with the information. Not only was I pleased with the information, but it was also confirmed with the other information that I was able to find on the internet.

The only information that wasn't able to be verifies (and will have to be tested via use) is the question of iron fouling the membrane.

I can't wait till I get it. It was shipped out from BC on the 7th. We'll see how fast UPS is.

I opted to get the 100 GPD even though it has a slightly lower rejection rate than the 75 GPD. If I am going to be refilling my tank at school every year, it is going to take about 26 hours to fill my tank (assuming I only get 50 GPD out of a 100 GPD filter).

Only experience will say, but I'm not counting on getting any more than 50 GPD (temp, TDS, pressure...etc).

Don't diss the eBay vendors. You will find that there are many folks that have units off eBay that range from $90 to $100. My ppm in my tap water is 360, out of the ro it is less than 30 and after DI it is 0 to 1 ppm.

Hmmm should I pay $90 for 0 ppm or $160 for 0 ppm???

That gives you a rejection rate of only around 91%? Versus 98%~99% of the higher rejection rates with other membranes.

I originally got the standard 100 GPD Typhoon that came with the Tw30-1812-100 membrane which only has a 90% rejection rate. I used the RO/DI unit for about six months & still had a bad hair algae problem & whent throuhg DI filters in about 150 gallons!
My tap water is at 125 TDS, & it has 3.5 mg/l Phosphates & the Silicate was off the scale. After the RO Membrane (before the DI) I still got a reading of over 2 mg/l PO4! at 12 TDS this is what my DI had to remove!

I have since replaced the 100gpd membrane with the high rejection 75gpd membrane, My test readings after the RO with the new membrane are now 0.5 PO4 at 2 TDS & I now get over 400 gallons from my DI versus the 150gal I got before!:D

Hmmm should I pay $90 for 0 ppm or $160 for 0 ppm???
I would rather spend a little more at first to save money in the long run!:D
