Last week my son and I visited the Newport Aquarium in Kentucky. While we were there one of the keepers told us about a large nurse shark with a badly bent tail.

When she was a baby, a woman bought her and raised the shark. She quickly outgrew the 2 foot tank she had, so the woman bought a 4 foot tank. The shark quickly outgrew this tank as well, but the woman couldn't afford a larger tank, so she kept the shark in the 4 foot tank. She couldn't even turn around in the tank, and her tail had to bend in order for her to fit. Eventually she donated the shark to the aquarium where she'll spend the rest of her life. Unfortunately, her tail is permanently damaged and the keeper said she rarely swims and you can tell it hurts her to do so.

Just a little story to dissuade people from the belief that saltwater fish will only grow to fit the size tank they're in.

The "moral of the story" seems to really be that large animals are much more difficult and expensive to care for. People get alligators - stupid. People get tigers and lions - stupid. And people get full sized sharks - stupid.
