The world is flat - we live in a global economy. A car purchase is only one of millions of transactions you make each year (and honestly, car purchase are at *best* every several years for most people).

The real key to "buying American" is to do it every day - on every item. But you know what? That's actually impossible to do with any reliability, quality control or cost control.

Hanging your hat on "buying American" when it comes to your car is silly - at least in practice. If it makes you "FEEL" better - then do it, but far more profit is passed around via electronics, toys, food, etc. than through cars.

Ford owns a big stake in Mazda & Volvo. Fiat is buying Chrysler, Hummer is being sold to an Indian company, etc... what's "american" vs. "foreign" isn't practical to determine any longer, especially with publicly traded companies as Kirbster points out.

Make choices with the most immediate local impact - if you can/want to - that's the best you can do. But you also have to make GOOD purchasing decisions, too... otherwise, you'll have problems with your finances or with your products.

Follow the money? It's global... ALL of it. Heck, with GM you're buying into a bankrupt, tax-dollar dependent company that has already failed. With Chrysler - almost the same thing. With Ford? Well, heck, they own the Lions, so already three strikes right there!:jester::nhl_checking::butcher:

My point is don't just think "cars" when it comes to foreign vs. US. And don't just think where the company is headquartered either...

Thomas Friedman is a smart, smart man - he saw this coming a while back, and nailed it.

FWIW: I *literally* just bought a Jeep... Seriously. Just tonight! Wrangler Unlimited. Pick it up on Thursday. So... I picked up a Jeep for you. Call me to come pull you out of the snow in your Buick!:jester:
