I have had this nice piece of LR with some halimeda spp. growing nicely. I saw the worm sticking out of a hole and reaching into a neighboring rock. It was stretched at least 6 to 8 inches from its hole. it had like a parasitic mouth on it picking the other rock. it is also a little less than 1/4 inch in diameter.

please tell me if it is bad or good. If it is bad then suggest a way to remove it. Hopefully it is good and nothing needs to be down.

I think I have the same thing, only more than one. Mine are about an 1/8" dia. and blue with black stripes. They can go from an inch long and stretch to 5 or 6" long. When they strech out and open thier mouths they definitely look like predators.

On RC there are a ton of posts about huge worms. Preuss' (Lansing Pet Shop) caught one a few months ago but compared to the ones on RC, it was tiny...like a foot or two. They had it in a cage for a while in their clam tank. Gives me the willies.

Yeah, he's still there. Creapy nasty thing. We thought about letting him back out, but we're not sure he's harmless. He looks a lot like the picture of the palolo worm in borneman Aquarium Corals, but darker.

Creaps me out just thinking about the thing.

Russ, I got a nice piece of rock from my brother when he broke down his 120 gal. Before we moved it to my tank we found there was a large nasty worm living in this piece of rock. It was taking little bites out of one of his clam's mantle. I decided it had to go before I put the rock in my tank. We took some water from his tank and mixed in more salt. I did not take a reading on the water to see what the salinity was but I know it was quite a bit stronger than normal strength. We diped the rock for about a minute and then held it just above the water. That nasty critter came sliding out and I couldn't believe it. YUK!!!

The following picture is of the worm in the bottom of a 5 gal. bucket before he was "set free".

Scott,
Those worms freak me out. If I ever find a worm like that in my tank, I will set fire to my house before I put my hand in the tank to get it out. You are a better man than me dude.
Rock on,
Scott

Oh yeah, if I do end up getting a worm like that, will you come and dig it out for me as I am a complete wus?

It is probably a peanut worm. I have them all over the place. Kinda goofy looking things.
I have all sorts of colors, I have one that is electric blue, and yellow striped, I have some that are a reddish clay like color, and a few others that are a gunky green/tan.
They seem to be harmless, "They mostly come out at night....mostly"

If you end up with a worm like this in your tank I would be happy to remove him from your tank and "give him back to Mother Nature". [D]

Heck, we could have a worm removal party and invite everyone from Michiganreefers.com!!!!

Eewww! I am SO SICK of worms! When I first was setting up my tank, there were just a few rocks that were transferred over form the other guys tank. The next day, there was this 12" (at least) bristle worm that was just crawling around the substrate in plain daylight. [O] I was shockingly appalled!

Of course I grabbed my tweezers and put the thing in a bowl. I kept starring at it in disbelief and kept making "ewww" noises. My husband scolded me to stop starring at it and just get rid of it. So I tore myself away and the garbage disposal unit got a nice lunch!

When I think about it now, it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. It was definately one of the grossest things I've seen.

Then I saw on one of the online website that charge money for baby bristle worms. I couldn't believe it! Like somebody would PAY to put this in their tank, on purpose??? Yuck, yuck, yuck.

The tweezers are ALWAYS handy. When I see them, I try to grab them. They are a nusiance in my own tank as they burrow and eat the clams from the bottom foot side. They do not play nice and neither do I.

Scott,
Like I said before, I am a total wus and if you have to come over to get that kind of a worm out of my tank, I will guarantee that I will not be anywhere close to the house. Invite all the people you want but when the people leave, the worm goes as well! LOL.

I can't seem to get a good picture, but he looks like a elephants trunk and extends out and in to reach things off neighboring rocks. Hope this can help identify him. I did see him out at least 6 inches stretched. I think it is attached to the inside of the LR hole.

Try looking at pics of Eunice worms, see if it matches up with what you are looking at.

Try reading through this.

http//reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-04/rs/index.htm

It has several examples of some of the worms that you would see in a reef tank.

im my 15 gal i have 2 f the biggest bristle worms ive ever saw ,,,i think some might consider them bristle snakes ,,,,one i saw one night after i turned out the main light it cralwed across the sand to a diffrent rock , id say he was bout 9inches long .......finding the other was not such a good experince..i just bought a big peice of lr rock from the tropicorium and then took the hammer to it to make some smaller peices ...well one hit did it cracked it into like five peices ,,so i gahter the rock from the floor of the basement and walk upstairs to go to the bedroom .....well from inside the rock comes creeping out a 13inch bristle worm ....well need less to say i paniced and feaked out and the olny thing i could think to do was brush this worm off my arm onto the tank...it was the worst thing to happen to me ever..took me the whole day to quite checking my arm for random giant worms. and the worst part is that now i have two giant worms in the tank (witch gross me the hell out evertime i think of them)...i was gonna buy a bristle worm trap but when i saw it i was afraid it would olny serve to insult the worms (as the worms are bigger than any trap ive seen this far)making them more angry and blood thirsty...i think its time to take sherms idea and burn this joint to the ground....or maybe i can build up the courage to grab the worm crocadiale hunter style and wrestle in a fight for my life ..come to think of it i owe that worm some pain... its on now wormz ...muhahahahahahahahahah ...opps sorry got a bit side tracked..what was my point.. ohh yea wormz are bad ...really bad
thanks t
