strawberry fields lacking polyp extension

941 Views 10 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  dputt88
I picked up a frag of strawberry fields at the last swap. I haven't seen the polyp extension that i would like, although it looks healthy otherwise and there is some polyp extension im looking for some advice on how to improve it.

Pics coming soon.

Hi Doug,

Here is my PCSF:

Can you tell me about the light, flow, and parameters?

James

Hey Nick,

Hope all is well!

Regarding the coloration, I can get the red tips under bright light. I can provide the actual PAR level tomorrow. As for the green coloration, I get the best color when I dose some form of aminos combined with feeding. As long as I can keep my phosphate and nitrate low while maxing out feeding, I can get the bright green coloration.

It needs decent amount of light but a TON more of flow!
Another acro that hates to be touched and hates ALK swings worse!!
ok so this one is in decent flow, a lot more than i keep my birdsnest. as for lighting i have 4 bulb t-5 ( one aquablue special, one coral plus, one blue plus and one purple plus) the fixture is 4 inches away from the water and the coral is about 6-8" underwater. i also have 2 452nm stunners. if yall say it needs a lot of flow ill try to increase it in the morning.

Hi Doug,

The way that I describe the perfect amount of flow for SPS is this:

Enough flow to keep all of teh polyps moving around, but not enough flow to make the polyps look like they're in a wind stunnel.

Your light shouldn't be the culprit. The lower light will have an impact on the amount of zooxanthallae, but not the polyp extension.

Can you tell me if the coral had polyp extension when you bought it?

I should also say that strong direct laminar flow can cause the retraction of the polyps.

What type of fish do you have in your tank?

it didnt have polyp extension when i bought it, but it was a frag swap, all that moving around prolly caused that. it did have some polyp extension after dipping and like i said some polyp extension for the past week. pretty much what made me start this thread was looking at all your pics on CR.

I'm glad those pics are being used :) I think that you may have a healthy SF that needs some time to settle into its new environment. Even if you placed that very frag next to mine, it would take some time to adjust to it's new environment. The good news is you have polyp extension (missed that when I was drinking my purple gang pilsner last night). If you give this coral stable parameters, food, proper flow, and strong lighting, it will eventually look like mine. If your polyp extension becomes non-existent, then I can always make the trip up to Romeo to take a closer look for you.

Warmest Regards,
James
well thanks for the offer, but this morning when i woke up there was the typical amount polyp extenstion i observed the polyps and they were swaying, just like you described. so i did move the frag or change the flow. think im gonna just ride it out.

good flow- check, i assume
good lighting- check
food- check ( coral frenzy, phyto, rotifers, 3 species of copepod. not sure if sps consume the later two but they are added to the tank daily for other corals/animals)
stable parameters- check ( using an ATO, everything that is dosed is dripped into the tank, no temp swings etc.)
