Looking for opinions on type of substrate most preferred and heater brands as well. Setting up 180 reef tank.

Special grade is a good all around choice.

Heaters - sump under the tank or in the basement? Under tank a bank of eheims is a fine choice. While most heaters are considered submersible keeping them upright seems to extend their life IME.
Basement, closed loop water heater would be my choice.
