Just wondering...
How many tangs are too many? I may have went a little tang crazy. I always wanted them and could never have them in my smalleer tank.

I have a 240gal tank (8x2x2)

1 sailfin tang
1 powder blue tang
1 yellow tang
1 naso tang

is that too many? They all get along and eat like mad. In addition to the tangs I havea false perc pair and a small goby.

normally i would say yes 3 would be the max i put in that tank but if there getting allong hey who cares right? i wouldent suggest adding too many more fish though as they all get pretty big and in a few years will out grow even that tank.

In a 240g tank I think your OK. My only word of warning is that tangs, especially Sailfins, like to get HLLE. My Sailfin has a case right now I'm embarrased to say. Make sure in your feeding lots of vitamins through seaweed, algae, Selcon or some other additive. You don't want your tangs to look like they just came out of a prize fight.

yeah. I have been keeping a pretty close eye on them. So far they are all real healthy looking. I got the powder blue from a friend's tank. He had been picked on a lot. Since he has been w/ me his fins have all come back, he no longer hides behind a rock all day and his color has been better.
The yellow tang looked like he might be getting black ich. about two days after i added him, he got covered in black specs. could have been somesort of parasite too? I tried like hell to dip him out of the tank for treatment. no such luck. then the next day he was completely rid of them. no other fish seem to have anything like this.

I was told you can put tangs together as long as they all have different body shapes. If they have the same shape then they will more than likely not get along.

BUT, I would have to go along with Will and hjmtv on this one. Since you do have a large tank (Hey...I'm extremely jealous over here!) and they are all getting along for the time being, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

red that is normall the rule but it changes once you get above a 150 gal. i wouldent put more than 2 in a 125 long and no more than 3 in a 180. but once oyu hit 300 its what ever get allong pretty much.

HLLE = Head & Lateral Line Erosion. It is a condition where the outer flesh around the eyes and along the lateral line of the tang errodes and leaves the flesh underneath exposed. Here is a before and after pic.

Before

After

I have read that it is caused by vitamin deficientcy. (I have a grounding probe so I don't believe that is a cause). The cure is a diet of high vitamin foods. recommended are spinish, broccoli, romaine lettuce and selcon. I soak my dry pelets in selcon but the condition is not improving. I am about to move the sailfin into a small tank so I can treat the HLLE more aggressivly........(Aren't you glad you asked?...lol)

it is also caused by stray electrical currents which is why you should use a grounding probe allways just in case. i have cured it by using ocen nutritions VHP formula which means very high protien. try some of this food hjmtv it might work for you also.

Nice Tangs and Good Pic!
I think they will be fine in the 240 together. hjmtv is very right about this "Make sure in your feeding lots of vitamins through seaweed, algae, Selcon or some other additive."
I also add a meaty diet (Blender Mush) for them daily and a frozen stuff called Life Line, Formula I & II, cyclopeeze. I had read where Life Line can help prevent HLLE, but don't remember where I read it. My tangs get a whole cube of Life Line mushed with their food daily. I also clip 3 types of seaweed selects in for them daily (1/4 sheet).
WILL C good info "it is also caused by stray electrical currents which is why you should use a grounding probe allways just in case. I have cured it by using ocen nutritions VHP formula which means very high protien." I will pick up some ocean nutritions VHP formula.
