My question is this: Are the top braces on the tank important?

I bought my tank used and the brace was gone. Is this something i really should worry about getting fixed?
Are you sure there was a top brace to begin with? What are the tank dimensions, and how thick is the glass?

yeah i am sure it was there you can see where it is missing. the dimensions are 36 x 16 x 21 and as for the glass thickness i am not sure. It is an all glass aquarium so i am sure it is a standard thickness.

Well, the reason I ask the thickness is because some tanks are made thicker so that no top brace is needed. However, it sounds like yours had one at one time, so definitely get a new one for it. The last thing you want to be worried about is the glass cracking from being over stressed.

my buddys center brace got broken in a move, so we made a new one out of 2 inch aluminum banding. it was like.... 1/4 thick, just make the bends carefully making sure you get the right length for the beam, nothing like trying to unbend something lol

all you need is to silocone or glu a peice of plexiglass to the top where the old one is hopefully the tank isempty the water will bow the glass out and if you brace it where it is bowed out it is pointless
