I'm looking of the right return pump for my 800 gph overflow. I will have one ball valve and at most two feet of pvc and possibly for 45 degree elbow on the intake and flexible tubing with two outlets for my return.

I have been looking at the rio 2500(782 GPH) return pump. Think it will do the job right?

Most centrifugal pumps actually work less if you restrict the discharge... I know it seems contrary to logic, but it is less work for them to sling water around in the pump cavity than push it up the pipe. You can try a power meter on your favorite pump to confirm, more watts open ended in a bucket, less watts with 6 feet of discharge pipe on them (or your finger over the end). More flow = more watts with most centrifugal pumps.

As far as a 1000 GPH pump on a 800 GPH overflow..... I doubt you would get over 700 GPH flow into your tank with any bit of piping and head loss, but your issue might come with anything blocking the overflow pipe... like a snail, fish, crab, or macroalgae. If it appears to be pushing towards the limits of your overflow with no restrictions you might want to consider dialing it down to account for something undesired getting its way into the overflow system at some point. Floods are no fun.

Thanks guys I appreciate the info I went with the quite one and ball valve to restrict flow if I need to. As far a snail blocking I'm not sure if I will have any or not its just a frag/grow out tank.

I have been impressed with the Water blaster line. Perhaps a 2000, or 3000. I really like the warranty. I had the 2500 on my 55G some 12 years ago and I believe it worked the entire 12 years but is not as efficient and if you decide to run it that long you will break even on the WB. Plus like they say things are not built like they use to be. The WB has a three year warranty.

If you are using flex pvc I am not sure why you would need a 45 as the PVC should make this bend for you. Like scissors says put a Tee on it and you can use down the road for reactors etc.
