Ok, I've finally completed the frame portion of my stand for my acrylic 170 tall. Here's the question, I'd like to waterproof the top (1x that the stand will sit on) and I figure since I haven't shelled or skinned the stand yet, should I just go ahead and waterproof the frame, which will become the interior of the stand?

Furthermore, no one will ever see what I'm waterproofing here. The top will be covered by the tank and the frame will be covered by the "skin" SO my question is what should I use? I was thinking Thompson's Water Seal. It's cheap, and again I don't care what it looks like. Over on RC everyone recommends polyurethane, Kilz, exteriot latex paint, etc.

I want to do this cheaply and with one coat. I'll wait for the 3 coats of urethane to put over my nicely stained skin. As for this interior, any suggestions? Thompson's ok?

Thanks!

For the best single coat I'd probably try a good epoxy paint-though 2 coats would be better. It would dry alot faster than polyurethane. Thompsons is only a temp thing-remember you have to re-coat your decks every year.

West System Is in my opinion the best epoxy that you can buy! It's a two part epoxy that has been used for years by wood boat builders!

Helmsmen Spar Urethane as "canisson" stated would be my next choice!

As for trying to do it cheap! You have to remember that the cheaper stuff will start to peel & could fall into the sump. With either of the above two you would not have to worry about it for years! You will pay more at first! But in the long run you will be a lot better & the stand will last a lot longer.
