Your return pump is too much for your overflow? I.E. it is pumping too much water and your overflow cannot keep up.

Do you install a valve on your return line that you can close partially to restrict some of the flow? Is that ok to do? Will that hurt your return?

Or should you install a T fitting with another valve to divert some of the flow back into the sump? Regulated by the valve on the flow into the sump.

Not sure if I'll have that problem, but want to be prepared if I do.

Thanks

you do NOT want to restrict the flow.......... you'll have heat issues and probably end up damaging the pump in the long run.

I teed off my return line to the tank with a gate valve plumbed back into sump and regulated my overflow that way....... my tank is drilled and I'm running one overflow with a 1" bulkhead and a mag 12 through a scwd and my valve is just about closed so all flow is into the tank.

just my opinion,
doesn't make it true

Hey bryan, i didnt get a chance to look at your overflow, but as unless you have a really small overflow i wouldnt worry about it. Your return is going to pumping out 1000gph, but unfortunatly it has to pump it back up 4 to 6 feet, so once it actually gets up to the return pipe, its probably only going to pumping into the tank between 500 to 600gph.

I'll throw myself in the face of opposition. You should have no worries about adding a ball valve in the returm line and cutting the flow down. I have a mag24 pumping into my 75g with 2 1" overflows. If I open the 24 up, she overflows. I have the ball valve turned off just enough to spill over the second pipe. No troubles. It seems the pump runs quieter with a bit of back pressure anyway.

Bryan,
Like Hjmtv, I have always put a ball valve after my pump. I currently have a Mag ??? that is balled back 1/4 but I also have a Tee inserted again with a ball valve so some of the water just shoots back to the sump. It has worked very well for me.

I also use a ball valve on the output of my Mag 24. I have had no problems.

I have read many things that have said you will not damage a pump by restricting the output. If you restrict the intake of the pump you can cause damage.

It's true

That's because it's true!! lol ad more water to your tank if you can it will allow the overflow to have more water pressure further down on the actual overflow part and more area in which can fall down into the overflow. Before you all argue this and tell me i'm a moron i'm only talking about that first part where it flows over into the overflow! I'm not a noob (i've beeen plkaying with water since i was 2);)

Thanks everyone. I have a 1" drain from my overflow and .75" tubing on my return.

Don't know if I'll have a problem, but now I know how to address it if I do!
