What to glue rock with?

960 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  mf2055
I had a large piece of rock break that I have at the top of my "Island". I need to attach a small piece of rock to it to hide the acrylic rod I am using to keep it in place. It needs to be secure because of the water flow. Can I just use aquarium silicone and if so can it be used wet or do I need to take the rock out? I don't want to kill it as it is live rock that has been in the tank for over a year.

If there is something else I can use, I welcome ideas.

superglue gel (not liquid).

You're not going to kill liverock by removing from the water for a short period of time. The only thing that would die off would be any sponges on the rock.
I know I can take it out for a short time like with super glue. I don't think super glue would hold because it is a pretty good sized piece of rock. I can try though. I was thinking if I used aquarium safe silicone, I may need to keep it out of the tank for it to dry. That is what I was referring to. I have used silicone in the past that could be used under water but it was so many years ago and I don't have a tube of it right now to see what the instructions are.

I hate to waste the super glue if it won't work since it would take so much of it to make a bond.

Make sure to turn your skinner off for a little while after using putty. It makes it go crazy ime.

Thanks for the tip. I will do that

Definitely definitely don't use aquarium silicone - as it cures it makes ammonia and some other nasties - it would definitely be a tank crash waiting to happen. You're better off using some epoxy like some of the others said.
I said weld on first time let me correct myself its called water weld

I use a mix of aquamend/waterweld epoxy from home depot and use superglue on either side. The superglue is needed to adhere to the rock and to the frag. You basically make the epoxy into a small ball and dab superglue on the top and bottom. You attach the frag on the top and then squish the entire thing down into the rock and hold it for a few seconds. It takes some practice but it works.
