I am looking for dry base rock. Ideally I would only want to pay about $1 a pound for it but obviously if it is very porous stuff then a little more would be ok. I saw some on eBay http//i3.ebayimg.com/03/i/00/cc/c4/54_1.JPG for $82 after shipping. It is hawaiian rock and it is for 60 pounds. So that is $1.36 a pound. Does anyone know if hawaiian rock is very porous? Do people like hawaiian rock? Thanks for the help guys

Tropicorium would be your best bet. They have hundreds of pounds to chose from inside. Depending on how much you are buying they may let you look through the stuff outside also. If you pick it by hand yourself it will allow you to get the shapes that you want or need. The one downfall about getting it from the Trop is that Ray picks all the best pieces for himself.

the only downside in my opinion to the dry base rock at the trop. is most of it is lace rock, most lace rock has alot of metals in it. and also there tends to be quit a bit of dried fungi on it. it also doesnt take to well to coraline algae atachment.

I don't agree that the coriline algae doesn't attach to the lace rock. I bought some of the lace rock from Trop for base when I started my 180 and after about two months you couldn't tell much of a difference in how much coriline was on the premium rock and the lace rock. The corriline grew very fast on the lace.

The guys at trop did show me some examples of the lace rock in their tank and it does grow corraline very well. However, this isn't the first time I've heard about the heavy metals in the rock. Does anyone have any experience with this and is it a problem.
