I have my 75 gallon reef currently running on a Rio 2100 that is connected to a scwd. I plan to purchase a new pump by next week. My question to you all is which pump do you think would do the job effectively? The pump must not exceed 1400 GPH. Price is no barrier. I was thinking of a MAG 12.... but I have heard mixed reviews on that subject.

Let me know what your opinion is on this matter.

Thanks,
Pat

Do you have to use the SCWD?

Instead of pushing more flow thorugh the sump and risking microbubble problems, why not add a Stream?

If you don't need pulse mode or speed control, 1800GPH of diffused flow is only $127...

Othewise, my favorite pressure rated pump below 1400GPH is the Mak4... low power consumption, not too noisy, runs cool, pressure rated (unlike the Mag, it will be far less effected by the resrictive SCWD). They're on sale at Premium Aquatics for $119, IIRC.

Talk to me about the Stream.... Can one provide me enough circulation w/o blowing my sand around?

Depends. The flow they provide is much more diffuse than what you'd get out of loc-line, etc., so local velocity is lower, but they move alot of water... what size substrate are you using, and how "full" (with rock, by volume) is your tank?

Its a standard 75.. filled with four inches of two mil crushed coral sand... fairly full of rock.

How does it attatch to the tank?

What is a scwd? I am also looking to get a new pump for a 75 but it is a tall tank with a 30 gal. fuge. I am not trying to steal your post but I am also curious of people's opinions. Mine is an external pump.

A SCWD mechanically switches current between two outlets. They are susceptible to particulates jamming their gearing, and they are VERY restrictive, killing pump output on low-pressure pumps. Here's a link from with lotsa info, started when they first came out: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=139546&highlight=SCWD+cheap

You need a "pressure rated" pump for sure with them, unless you want to waste alot of flow.
