Well I must have done something extra special Saturday night because Sunday my wife said that if I really wanted to, I could get a bigger tank! There are some stipulations though ... or really just one. It has to go in one of the walls in the basement. The room this wall 'hides' is the furnace room though. I'm excited to have a room for my fish stuff, but I am concerned that there will be quite a bit of heat in the winter. What should my concerns be? Because this is behind a wall I won't have to have a canopy to trap the hot air and I can have a 'huge' fan blowing across the top of the tank, but will the room be to hot just because the furnace and hot water heater are in it?

I want a 180 gallon tank (6'x2' base tank). Thanks for your time, input, or encouragement (or even telling me, don't put it in the furnace room).

First of all congrads! Second i wouldent worry too much about the heat, Your basement being that it is below the frost line will be cooler than the upstairs even with the heaters. A basement will will want to obtain a natural 62 degrees and with the heat i would say it wouldent get any hotter than 68 70 degrees at the most. My furnace room does not get any hotter than any other part of the basement.
What kind of furnace do you have a 80+ or 90+? If it's a 80 just make sure you have plenty of airway to the furnace room.

If heat is a problem in the winter, put a register in between that room and the next room. If needed put a little fan in to help get rid of the heat. I don't think you'll have to worry unless you keep your house really warm or if you have a lot of heat loss and the furnace has to run a lot to maintain upstairs temp.

Thats actually how my 90 is setup. I have about 2 1/2 to 3ft between the back of my tank and my furnace. I never had an issue with heat last winter. I have had a little bit of a heat issue this summer, only becuase I don't have central air. One of your bigger concerns is going to be the humidity in that room.

To cure that I have a 12" oscillating fan that runs all the time. That by itself keeps the humidy right around 60. I just started running another fan that has a timer and I can get the humidity down to about 50.

If you have central air I don't think you'll have any problems at all.

Dehumidifier

I have a Kenmore dehumidifier rated at 110 qts a day (i'm pretty shure that's what it is rated at...) I is lightly used and cost me a coupla hundred bucks. It's adjustable to every 5 percent of humidity down to... 45% I think (might be 50%). So you can set it at say...60% and it only runs when the humidity gets over 60%. It's realy nice and has a few other features. If your interested I would sell it for $50 or so. Lot cheaper than running an exahaust fan through the house!
