My discus laid eggs about 2 hours ago!!! I'm so excited, first time having discus breed. Yay.

The male is either my Cobalt Blue or San Merah, the female... not exactly sure... I'm not sure which is the daddy because the cobalt and the SanMerah both seem to guard the eggs and fan them, and I know the female is the female because I watched her lay some eggs.

Awesome! Good luck with the babies! What size is your tank?

Discus

That's great they spawned... :D ... it will be interesting no-doubt to "see" how they look a few months from now. Your Discus have some nice colorization. What is your waters ph. ?? Any full pics available of entire tank--??-- Keep us posted. :)

Well the tank they are in now is a 120 gal AGA. I'll get a full shot of that, but the bad thing is there are 2 bristlenose plecos, 2 cory cats, 2 yellow panchax, 3 black neons, and 10 discus total... so, they eggs will more than likely be eaten, since this is their first brood, I'm won't be too shocked.

However I'm gonna set up a 30 gal breeder tank, barebottom with some sponge filters. Now that I know I have a breeding pair... kinda... I am gonna make all of the proper arrangements. Plus next time they lay eggs I'm going to plan on doing 50% water changes daily. I really want to have some success with this.

Any other discus people on here?

Lovely, I am going through several online articles. I'm also adding in what I've been told by Cary from Choice Aquariums, a few months ago.

I'll head downstairs to take some pics after I've fully researched breeding a bit more.

And all the eggs were eaten... I'm sooo bummed, but it's to be expected and I'm setting up a breeding tank. Well, I think I should just wait and see if my gf and I are going to move or not...

sorry for the loss johnos I wish I had discus I just cant justify the 25 to 50 bucks per fish so instead I have africian cichlids and they spawn way to much and have sevearly over crouded the tank now

Don't get discus!!! They are more work than my reef tank! Ask almost any other discus keeper that has SW.

**Why do you say that.?? I know they are more work than a reef tank and require frequent water changes. Some people don't change the water as often as it is required, as stated in Discus care books/internet.etc. You have some nice Discus and may bring in some good prices for their offspring/juvies. ***

oh yea the offspring will bring in some nice prices if you can sell them

actualy I dont think they are that much work you just have to keep your water pristine wich I do already even though my tank has about 3x as many fish as I want in it due to the idiots refusing to stop breeding and not beeing able to sell the fish

*** I am somewhat "surprised" that Discus are difficult to sell to LFS. I would suspect that healthy Discus would be desired by LFS..and..what are you asking for them when trying to sell to the LFS..??? ***

well I dont know if they would be or not as I dont have them but I know I have a very hard time selling my africian cichlids specialy since there is only one store close to me that will buy them and no bites for selling them online

Sorry to hear that, but as you said - it's very, very common for the first batch or two, especially in a community environment.

If you have any questions at all, please give me a call - I'd be glad to help you out.

Thanks Cary, once we move I plan on setting up a breeder tank, so I can have a bulkhead in the bottom for draining water to do water changes. But, should I have another tank ready to transfer the parents to once the babies get 1 or 2 weeks old, so they don't hurt the parents by eating too much of their slime coat?

Yes, I like to remove the parents as soon as the babies are taking baby brine or shaved frozen bloodworms. If you've got a clean source for live blackworms, those also make a good first food.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing by setting up a breeding tank with easy access to water changes - lots of clean water and good food is key.

Hope that helps.
