Its a 45 gallon FOWLR tank. Hang-On filter. About 2.5 years old.

I added some live rock last night. Put about 10 more lbs in it, put about 10-15 lbs of the same stuff in on Sunday. I just put some of the same live rock (about 70 lbs) in my 75 gallon on Sunday.

I did a 10 gallon water change using RO/DI water.
The only thing I did change was I used some Instant Ocean Salt from a 5 gallon container that was given to me. I usually use Instant Ocean from a bag. But this was given to me by some one who no longer had a use for it. I did notice when mixing the salt, it would create heat (I have never noticed that before). It was also more granular than I was used to. When mixed the water stayed pretty cloudy.
After adding everything. My wife and I checked the PH, it was a little low (7.9) so we put some buffer in, the recommended amount. This was last night around 12:30.
The water cleared up this morning.

This morning at 6:30, everything is dead. Dead hermit crabs, dead snails, dead worms that live in the rocks, and I am pretty sure my peppermint shrimps and cleaners shrimps are dead too. PH was 7.9 again, so I added a little more buffer. We checked all levels, and everything is fine. I sucked out what I could and went to work.

What did I do? Is my salt contaminated? Are my fish going to die before I can get home at 5:30?

Thanks

Man, that's messed up. Everytime I hear one of you guys talk about a major crash, it gets my mind racing with thoughts of "what if that happened to me!!" If your fish are still alive when you get home, maybe you can scoop them out and do a complete water change.

Question: What happens once you've done something like that(added say calcium chloride), does everything like live rock and sand need to be taken out and washed and scrubbed, or would a near 100% water change do it, how strong and harmful is that stuff and at what amounts??

Does this mean I should run home and put my fish in my other tank? I can probably get out of work for lunch and take a really long one.

Will my fish be dead by then?
Will a 100% water change help things? Did I just kill all of my live rock?

Ammonia as of this morning seemed to be good.

Maybe that wasnt salt in the bucket......

Thanks for the help everyone

Well I would guess 1/4 of your tank volume would do it. He has a 45 gal and did a 10 gallon water change. If everything is dead in the tank i would take all the rock out just to wash out any dead critters that are left. That would suck big time, I would be makeing some calls to whoever gave me that jug claiming it was salt mix. But then again, I would never mix or put anything into my tank if i wasnt 100% sure what it was. Never take anyones word that whats in a container is exactly what its supposed to be.

best thing to do

is test the tank se where you are in this case you need to test Calcium, Ammonia, nitrates nitrites alk and ph for sure if you don't have all those kits I can help and test for you. sorry for your loss I know it's upsetting. not going to lecture here just remind others to be careful getting things for free. also if it seems like something is wrong stop. Steve sorry man just trying to keep others from making a mistake too.. I know it stinks if I can help ask. :victory:

This is 100% my fault. I cannot place blame on someone else due to my ignorance.

I just hope I can fix it. My wife is gonna kill me if I kill her clown fish and lemon peel angel. She has had them for years.....

I doubt the LR has anything to do with it. I`m sure it wasnt what you thought it was in the bucket. Do a 50% water change maybe at lunch time and another later on tonight, with a fresh bag of mix of course! If your fish werent dead when you left they still may have a chance. If you dont have to much rock you could just rinse them off really good or maybe even get them into another tub with some power heads, get anything that has died out of there.

Is the best thing to do to get my fish out of there?
My 75 gallon tank is A-OK. Can I stick them there? I have a 15 gallon tank I could mix up and put them in for a bit.
I also have a 40 gallon tub with about 40 lbs of live rock in it. I could stick them in there while I get this tank all figured out.

I would get them out and put them in the tub. If you put them in your 75 you may never get them out again:) That way, you can figure out what's wrong with your tank. If it killed your inverts, your rock is most likely dead and you'll experience a cycle again...the fish probably won't make it through another cycle.

I don't think it would be kalkwasser, your pH would jump with a 10% addition.
