Heard on another forum about total tank crashes using teef crystals. They should be posting their batch numbers today. Both people were using new buckets of rc that they had recently purchased. It killed just about everything. I will spread the word on the batch numbers as soon as i find out.

That was the same batch number I used when my tank crashed... I never thought something could be wrong with the salt too. :'(.

I just finished the last little bit off today in a mix with new salt... I hope I don't wake up to another disaster! What should I do? Is there anything to be done about the losses because I didn't know about the salt earlier? So much for sleeping now lol....

Both of my buckets have the same number and I haven't had a problem. Crashes happen because a) rc sometimes doesn't mix their product as they should and b) knowing this, people are too lazy to actually shake their bucket. People really need to start shaking/mixing this product. Since it is not a natural product, sometimes the different additives get layered in the bucket. Yes, it is a pain in the @#% but rc is one of the best salt mixes imo (also used by major aquariums). I would not panic, I would shake/mix the salt.

Good point.
I would love to see the plant this stuff comes from and how they go about combining everything.

I could see though a tank croaking from getting a massive overdose of say calcium...that would likely do it. I was about to go try it since I have been using IO for many years and wanted something with higher calcium and magnesium levels to help get me by between water changes.

Guess it never hurts to test your water before using it either...

I would be worried more about iodine overdose or some of the trace/essential elements...

I have seen pics of the plant, it looks intense! But with as much product as the move, it doesn't surprise me to get a bad batch every now and then. I wonder what safeguards they have in place...

As for anyone who has a bucket with their posted numbers, I'm sure an email with a picture and possibly a receipt would get you a refund. If you had a tank crash due to this salt, and have it well documented instant ocean may compensate. That would probably take a formal letter with your documentation though.

They are a very good company, and like many other good companies they want to make right any wrong they may have caused.

I'm done with RC. moved to Salinity two weeks ago and not looking back. Buy at Kees Pet Store in Shelby Twp. w/ pet club membership its 75 bucks and they have a 10 off coupon if you spend 100 or more. So, buy some other stuff worth 25 bucks. The big bucket is like 220 gallons, which for me, with a 65g who does biweekly 10g water changes will last a year. I think its reasonable price to pay for quality. I keep hearing stuff about RC and had my own experience w/ low mag in tank after doing a 10g water change about a month ago. Too much money invested to screw this up.

I agree there seems to be a lot of anecdotal evidence of bad reef crystals, but considering it is probably the most widely used salt (along with instant ocean) it probably gets thrown under the bus more often than it should....I do agree with aquavitro salinity though, that's what I use at home on my sps system, my big system at work is mostly softies and lps so I use RC there to save a few bucks, I stir the buckets and occasionally test the mix, haven't had any problems thus far...

Hi, I got one of those big buckets, seemed fine at first, but SPS did not care for it, at end of bucket, it was total cloudy in tank for 3 hours. Dumped the rest out. This stuff really needs to be mixed well by the buyer, well the large bucket is 67lbs, so difficult to do. Back to RC and when I get extra money I will get D-D Pro salt, love it.

Several major brands of salt are made by Marineland just like IO and RC. Chances are when you buy another brand you are buying the same product packaged under another name. Certain elements in the salt separate and settle during shipping and no matter what salt you use you should mix it well before using it or mix the entire bag/bucket all at once. I have used RC for many years and have never had a problem.

.. I have the exact coded bucket of RC. If anything my tank is at its best right now. Id say there is maybe 250k buckets out there with same code as well. hmmmmm, hear too many horror stories? mix your salt up occasionally (any brand) and test your mix occasionally (any brand) duh

I use RC, and will continue to. I see all the threads and wonder if I am doing something right, or others are doing something wrong. Great tip on the mixing of the bags in an old bucket! I guess those lucky enough to have 50 gallon mixing stations don't have to worry about that, in fact I will now be designing a 50 gallon mixing station into my multitank system for just this reason!
