I am going to change the rear brake pads for my 1994 Chevy Astro. Does anyone ever change one ? The brake pads does not look the same as most cars. Since it is an all wheel drive, that might be the reason why.

I have only changed pads on my taurus. if they are disk brakes easy as pie. i would suggest getting one of those car books that tell you how to fix/repair everything from brakes to transmission. I got one for my car (I am mechanically inclined but still dont want to screw up my vehicle) and it has come in handy many times on my taurus. even helped me figure out how to get drum brakes off =].

I think that car has drum in the rear. If it is drum you'll want to spend the ten bucks on the spring tool.

Drum is very simple, just a bit more work than disc, just look at it and think it out and you'll get it. You shouldn't need a repair manual for it.

tony is right it should be drum brakes..... biggest thing to remember is when replacing brake shoes........... the shoe with the shorter lining goes toward the front of the vehicle... seems to be the most common mistake people make with drum brakes....

Yes, it is a drum brakes. I found that out when purchase the brake pads at Napa auto parts. I don't know why some cars has disk brakes and some has drum brakes. Does it has any thing to do with all wheel drives ? Like Tony said, I would have to make another trip to Napa and purchase the spring tool.

Matt, also remember to do one side at a time, in case you need a reference to look at or during reassembly.
But like Tony said, drum spring tools help big time.

He he, I just got back from Napa and got the tools with me. Tony, you are wrong. It was not only ten dollars or so it was a total of thirty dollars some thing. Actually there are two different tools, so I got them both.

thats not necessarily true. my drum brakes both are the same size. However i did have to make sure the holes matched up =]

Ok, so I should have specified IF you have two diff length linings........ the shoe with the shorter lining ALWAYS goes to the front...
