I'm building a refugium right now too!!!

Good fun!

The DSB should be at least 4" deep. Deeper is better. It gives more room for anaerobic bacteria to live.

I believe you don't want LR to touch the sand since the water currents around the rocks will cause the sand around the rocks to be washed away.

BTW, I could be wrong about those reasons... however that's what and why, I do what I do.

i have a question, which is going to sound stupid to most, but is the purpose for the light diffuser above the sand so that dead spots aren't greated? is the live rock used instead of macro algea?
